Four deaths over two days! BVI’s COVID casualties now at 8

Another two persons in the British Virgin Islands have now died from COVID-19.

This brings the total number COVID-related deaths in the territory to eight — the last four of which were reported within the past two days.

The most recent deceased persons are an 83-year-old female and a 36-year-old female who were both patients at the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital at the time of their passing.

In the meantime, the total number of active cases in the territory now stands at 1,602 persons. The government’s COVID hospital admissions summary as of 6 pm on Thursday, July 15 show that 11 persons have been admitted to the emergency room. Three died.

Twenty-two persons were admitted to the COVID-19 ward which also has recorded three deaths. Another five COVID patients were admitted to hospitals Intensive Care Unit which has seen two deaths to round off the the total eight persons who died from the coronavirus locally.

Meanwhile, one COVID patient was admitted to Behavioural Health Unit while and another was admitted to the hospital’s Obstetric Unit.

A total of 41 unvaccinated persons have been admitted to the hospital to date.

“Given that the BVI is experiencing high community transmission all symptomatic persons should immediately assume that they are COVID positive. Therefore, we need persons to adhere to isolation and quarantine orders,” Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronald Georges said have said.

The unvaccinated members of the community are encouraged to take advantage of the vaccination drive this Saturday and Sunday, July 17th and 18th on the festival grounds from 9 am to 5 pm to get vaccinated.

“The more people we can get vaccinated the less the mortality rates. Persons who are being severely impacted from COVID-19 have preexisting medical conditions. We are making a special appeal to our vulnerable population to get vaccinated today to save your life tomorrow,” Dr Georges said.

  4. Please get vaccinated says:

I’m visiting and it is very sad to see so many sick, dying, and dealing with lockdowns. Back home where vaccination rates are 60+%, COVID is basically over. No masks, no restrictions, and no people dying from a preventable disease.

Please get vaccinated, if not to protect yourself, then to protect the young, the elderly, the otherwise immunocompromised, and the vulnerable people harmed by the current restrictions.

Getting vaccinated doesn’t protect anyone but yourself. It does not prevent infection, it just minimises the impact once infected. Stop misinforming!

Yes, vaccination PRIMARILY helps the vaccinated person. It allows you to get a jump start on fighting the infection and greatly lowers your risk of severe illness or death by 95%. That would be the reason the UK and US are seeing 99% of current deaths among those unvaccinated.
BUT – because the vaccinated have a jump start on fighting the infection, the viral load in the nasopharynx is much lower, making it far less likely for them to pass on sufficient virus to infect another. If you don’t understand this, you have no right to be giving others medical advice.

Studies in the UK have determined that you are 75% less likely to pass the vaccine on, if you are vaxxed. So the notion that you are equally contagious when vaccinated is just false, the purpose being to confuse the issue. 75% less likely to transmit. 90% less likely to be hospitalized. 95% less likely to die. The vaccine changes the odds of all three things.

Totally agree. Please get vaccinated unless your physician advises against it due to underlying conditions. Just returned from the BVI as cases escalated, and it’s so sad. The impact of this COVID19 uptick in cases is not going to be positive when the hospital is at capacity, understaffed, and begins to triage based on the probability of you surviving COVID based upon less risky factors. Get vaccinated! Listen to the experts…the scientific data is proven to help. Be informed and stop listening to the quacks. My condolences to the families of the deceased. Praying for the BVI’s well being.

  5. My Condolences says:

to all surviving family members of each victim of covid. I pray all those who are infected now will make a full recovery. This is just sad.

To those of you who have not been vaccinated to date, I want to make a personal appeal to each of you to seriously consider getting vaccinated as soon as possible.

Take advantage of that vaccination drive this weekend. Do it for yourself, your family, your neighbors, and the community at large. Do it for the ones you love.

Stop the hurt; stop the pain.

May the deceased RIP. God be with them.

To our healthcare workers on the front lines, thank you for your service and your tireless efforts trying to save lives.

I pray for your safety. Know that there are people like myself on the outside who support you in your very difficult work. Stay safe.

Why aren’t vaccinations mandatory? How can we reopen the country when less than half the population is vaccinated. Who is in control here?those opposed to vaccinations should be required to dig the graves for those who will die.

      1 – The non-Citizens will get vaccinated.

Did you ever watch the line ups at the vaccination centers? Expat after expat.
How many of those expats taking the vaccination died from it? NONE.
How many of them have ended up critical or dying of COVID? Also, NONE.
Hmmm…I wonder why (insert a sarcastic eye roll)

@Comeon Maybe you just don’t get it, If I am vaccinated and you are vaccinated even if you get it from me it won’t be as bad as if you didn’t get vaccinated, it has been proven in places where they have a high number of vaccinated people that they are able to open up no mask and not all the rules, but we can’t get there until we have a high number of vaccinated people. You guys believe what you want to believe but you have the proof right in front of you with the number of unvaccinated people in the hospital, think about your family stop the bull crap, and get vaccinated. If you don’t get vaccinated when it hits you just go to beach and drink a lot of bush tea.

Here’s the question everyone has to ask themselves: WHEN you get Covid (not if, 10% of us have it) will you wish that you had been vaccinated ?
Covid vaccines have been the most thoroughly tested and monitored ever, by now. The results are incontrovertible.
    INFECTION: With 2 doses effectiveness
against infection is estimated at around 65 to 90%.
TRANSMISSION: a single dose had household contacts with approximately 35 to 50% reduced risk of becoming a confirmed case of COVID-19.
DISEASE: 65 to 90% against symptomatic disease.
HOSPITALISATION: protection 75 to 85% after 1 dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine
MORTALITY: 2 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine around 75 to 99% protection against mortality.

  16. New says:

What I’m seeing is that the BVI wasn’t educated on COVID properly by the Health Department. Tortola is now going through what the US and other countries were going through the beginning of 2020. A protocol should have been put in place when they decided to open the island, if there was one it was totally unorganized. People need to get vaccinated, it’s not a cure, it lowers you risk of being hospitalized and dying. The obese, elderly and people with underlying issues are at high risk. Please maintain social distance, wear your mask properly and sanitize.
