Fraser says ‘Fat Lady’ hasn’t sung, vows to press on

Third District Representative, Julian Fraser.

Deputy Premier and Third District Representative Julian Fraser has pushed back against suggestions that his political career is nearing its end, declaring that he still has work to do and is not ready to step aside.

Fraser made the remarks during Rajah Smith’s Fish Talk community event in Sea Cows Bay on June 10, amid growing discussion about who could represent the Third District should the veteran legislator decide not to seek re-election.

“I am in the forefront of all this, all these movements, so when people walk around and talk about ‘Fraser is old’, ‘Fraser needs to step aside’. Okay, he’s old and he need to step aside, but if I move, if I step aside, are you ready to step in?” Fraser asked. “Are you gonna step in and just be somebody to make up a number? I’m not there to make up a number.”

While acknowledging that his political career will eventually end, Fraser said there are still issues that require attention.

“Of course, all good things do come to an end, and at some point, whether it’s tonight, tomorrow morning, or whatever it is next month, my run will come to an end. But we have some big pictures that I’m looking at that we gotta clean up; we gotta fix,” Fraser stated.

He then invoked a familiar expression to suggest his political future remains unresolved.

“It ain’t over till the fat lady sings. Well, I ain’t see no fat lady around here,” Fraser remarked. “But you’re not coming here to sing.”

100% Team Fraser

His comments came one day after Smith appeared on JTV’s Big Story programme, where he said members of the public have asked him to run for office.

“A group of people within our community, the Third District, has approached me about running for the district if our representative, the Honourable Julian Fraser, decides not to run,” Smith said.

However, Smith stressed repeatedly that he remains loyal to Fraser and supports another candidacy by the long-serving representative.

“I’m 100% Team Fraser,” Smith said. “If he’s not on the ballot, I think I would be, or there’s some concession I might be or would be if he’s not on the ballot.”

Smith also said he would support Fraser seeking another term and suggested that his view was widely shared within the district.

“I think that if you go around the district and you talk to a majority of people, you would hear them say they think they’re giving one more term, one more chance. And that’s a large group of people that’s saying this,” Smith stated.

Should Fraser decide against running, Smith suggested he would likely seek election under Fraser’s Progressives United party banner.

Willock’s potential bid

Smith’s comments also come as former House Speaker Julian Willock continues to be linked to a possible Third District bid. Willock previously indicated that he believed the seat could become available after Fraser’s current term and has stopped short of ruling out a run.

More recently, Willock has said any decision on his candidacy depends largely on whether Fraser seeks re-election, while maintaining that he has continued to support initiatives in the district.

Excuse you, I know how to interpret things very well. Can I say the same about you? Don’t ever assume someone that you don’t know anything about can’t interpret anything or you will end up eating cat or dog s..t.

It’s NOT good news for Aaron. On the surface Aaron is the front-runner for sure. He is young, vibrant and stayed connected with the people even after he lost. However, the reality is that Fraser has already put it out there “Do you want to re-elect the Deputy Premier/Minister who will most likely retain such titles if he were re-elected or elect Aaron with a very weak NDP team under Marlon!” We will see how the voters vote but Aaron was better off facing Willock and/or Raja Smith.

District 3 needs to retire Fraser; not due to age or longitivtiy but district 3 needs vibrancy. This is the problem with the older politicians they think that nobody else behind them is read to lead but when will they ever be ready if they are not provided with the opportunity that the older ones had? When are the younger ones going to be ready; when will their opportunity come? Many of the ones now got in to politics and learned the ropes. Fraser it is time to go; go in grace, peace and love. Bring who you want, but go.

Looks like a jab at Aaron. He seems to be asking D3 if they will give up the Deputy Premier and a Minister for a youngster who may get lost in the shuffle. Election will be interesting. The young Parillon has momentum but sadly he is with a weak team and weak leader. Time will tell.

I feel that everyone that is entering the political field is not doing it for the right reasons. They are doing it for the glitz, perks and glamour. When one decide to enter the political field one should have the passion, drive and compassion for the craft. I also feel that if a man is married and he is vying for a seat in office his wife should be on the campaign trail campaigning for her husband as well.

Agreed 100%. The wives of the Politicians here on the Island want to sit back and reap the rewards and feel like they are entitled and feel like they are some type of First Lady, LMAO JOKES EH? Only in the BVI.
