Opposition legislator Julian Fraser is gearing up to seek an update on the controversial BVI Airways deal that is now before a US court, as well as information on the reported last-minute contracts the previous NDP administration awarded during the week of the 2019 General Elections.
Fraser is scheduled to put those questions to Premier and Minister of Finance Andrew Fahie during the fifth sitting of the second session of the Fourth House of Assembly, which begins today, February 20.
The amended order paper of the parliamentary proceedings indicates that Fraser will ask Premier Fahie to provide a breakdown of the financial disbursements to BVI Airways and to whom they were given.
Fraser — who plans to note that both past and present governments have largely “stonewalled” the Opposition on news relating to BVI Airways — will further require “an inventory of goods and services acquired by the said $7.2 million of government money”.
Fraser also plans to find out the names of the shareholders and directors of BVI Airways, the fees that were paid to each director of the airline and the names of the persons serving on the BVI Airways Board as representatives of the Government of the Virgin Islands.
The NDP’s pre-election contracts
In the meantime, Fraser has questions pertaining to the 2019 pre-election contracts issued by the Dr D Orlando Smith-led administration.
According to the order paper on today’s parliamentary proceedings, Fraser is slated to ask: “On Election Day, government-issued an $800+ thousand contract to an outside consultant to do works related to roads. Could the Premier and Minister of Finance please give this Honourable House: a) A report on the progress of the work contracted for? b) The names of any Virgin Islander or Virgin Islander owned company to gain from this contract? and c) Tell this Honourable House whether the contract is being executed according to schedule?”
The Opposition Legislator is also searching for answers for two major contracts he said the former administration signed on their last day in office, on February 22, 2019.
His question reads: “Could the Honourable Premier and Minister of Finance please tell this Honourable House: a) What major contracts were signed during the week of Elections 18th – 22nd February 2019? b) The status of completion of each contract, and provide a copy of each? and c) Whether they were competitively bided for?”
The HOA is scheduled to commence at 10 am.
