Getting projects done ‘like pulling teeth’ — Maduro-Caines

Alvera Maduro-Caines

Sixth District Representative Alvera Maduro-Caines has expressed frustration at being unable to get projects started within her constituency.

During the recent budget debate, the Junior Minister for Tourism described the task as being similar to that of a dental extraction procedure.

“The process to get these projects done is like pulling teeth. I do not understand. If the money’s there, why you have to pull somebody’s teeth to get them done? Somebody needs to put fire under somebody’s foot or feet, whoever is holding up the process. It’s ridiculous,” Maduro-Caines said.

She explained that residents of her district have been awaiting road repairs in their neighbourhood since the 2017 hurricanes.

The Junior Minister expressed disappointment about the long awaited wall and roadworks project in Baughers Bay near the Alexandria Maduro Primary School which she said appeared once again in this year’s budget as a line item.

Maduro-Caines further explained that she has other projects in her district that are yet to commence and said she was now prepared to fight, instead of sitting through another year waiting for projects to be done.

“I’ve had this being put in the budget year after year and for some reason the ministry and the department can’t get it done. And it’s not for the lack of of begging and arguing and pushing. I’m not up to arguing and pushing and begging [this] year. I’m telling you. Maybe I might be up to fighting, but I know I ain’t up to arguing,” she said.

“I do not understand why things are budgeted for, they’re in line items, some of them, and you still have to fight and fuss with departments and ministries to get these projects done,” she added.

So nothing has been done for all this time in office and not even a spit bomb of a reasonable excuse to give. How hard is it to look after a district or to make noise until something happens? If the minister is on the same side of the government, on the same party as the Premier, and not even the Premier did anything, what is his purpose? This only proves that the government is a set of people who are incapable of doing anything else but to blame others for their failures, instead of taking responsibility. It’s always this kind of talk around election time. No shame.

‘I can’t get any respect’…ahhhh! The sweet stench of upcoming elections is ripe in the air again. How long have you been in government ‘representing ’ the people? You mean to tell me that you don’t know how the system works by now?

If it’s been budgeted from consecutive years and you still cannot get this achieved; don’t you think it is time to retire? Just asking as it would appear as if you’ve become a ‘lame duck’ with no benefits for your constituents.

Do you think you can walk a mile in those representatives shoes? I dare you to try. Under the present constitution they are powerless. There is a procurement department within the ministry who moves to their own beat..not even the ministers..they are useless and dont care when projects gets finalized. in essence it begins and ends with them which is a sad state of affair. that dept needs turning up and throwing out if you ask me.

When she went and took a seat in the street , to fool people in believing that they were really protesting against the commissioner, governor and the racism s**t that they just discovered ? DUH , Meanwhile the country is being taken over by guns , cold blooded murderers and drugs / did she expect that her constituency would of fix itself ? ? ? All ah dem is just playing games with people’s minds

Listen, I have a lot of respect for the minister as a person, she has a good heart. I’m sorry to say, a good heart will not cut the fabric any longer. You have been in government for three terms with very little to show for it.
We cannot continue to elect weak people who can’t stand up for themself and let their voices be heard loud and clear, we need fighters, people who can mobilize and get their communities to rally around them and protest for their needs.
Once these parties know you are a weak minister, they will take you and your people for a ride until the next election. They are using you to make up their numbers to keep the NDP or VIP in power.
Well, it’s time for a change, new faces, new energy, new ideas.

    1. If there’s so much to be done, why are we sat behind a desk looking at blank application forms with a book that looks like it never been opened and a scotch tape, a hand sanitizer, chords that ain’t plugging in to no equipment and a small bottle of water? Is this the daily routine?

    2. If getting something done is like pulling teeth, does that mean the dentists in the country would be more qualified to lead and represent than the politicians as we know it?

The civil servants run the Territory. I do not understand why everyone is acting surprised. No matter which party is elected the civil service largely remains the same and they do what they want. The irony is that they fall under the Governor. Go figure!

all who ever heard a decent political debate at any time in the house of moo moo assembly please raise your hand. Everybody got a scripture but none of them can quote a section in the law. It’s all about colonial this and that, our ancestors this and that, senseless rants, some as if they having a mental breakdown, throwing words, but a decent debate that you can listen to and say yes, there goes a decent politician? Nope not one

  19. No shame says:

The question is, can they walk a mile in mine. By the looks of things I would say, nah. They are really tempting me to do something about it because the foolishness seems to have no end! If the problem is the procurement department then why are they moving to their own beat. A good leader knows how to be innovative to get results. I am not seeing any innovation. Leaders speak up and solve problems not nag about them behind a table full of papers.

Something sinister is happening in these VI. There is a chilling feeling that the VI has bottomed out and that we are being taken for a ride round and round in circles. Nothing is being accomplished not the least of anything at all.Talk talk promise, attempts at beginning with no conclusion no endings.
    What is going on???
    There is a doomsday heaviness.

  22. Mustang says:

These politicians are whiny, less, jokes. There are no collective responsibility in government. Some are just number and a waste. Government lacks the resources to meet all the demand for projects. Consequently, the projects have to be prioritized. Yet these politicians flap their lips that they are part of. They need to exercise some discipline and stay off WhatsApp chat groups, out of media, etc, fusing about government strups. But the weak PM cannot crack the whip.

  23. @debate says:

Never heard any “debate”. Only utterances
