Give us the facilities! Next Usain Bolt could come from VG

Territorial At-Large Representative Shereen Flax-Charles has said she believes Virgin Gorda is poised to produce the next athlete like sprint legend, Usain Bolt, and has called for the sister islands to be outfitted with adequate sports facilities like those on Tortola.

When members of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports appeared before the Standing Finance Committee recently, Flax-Charles bemoaned the fact that Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke have no athletic track which makes it difficult for athletes from those islands to fully develop that talent.

She also questioned when the Ministry plans to complete a swimming pool that it started on Virgin Gorda so youngsters can have that facility to practice.

Flax-Charles also said that financial constraints often prevent athletes from travelling to Tortola to use sports facilities and called for the Ministry to set aside funding to assist in this area. As an example, Flax-Charles mentioned two track athletes on Anegada who often find it difficult to travel to Tortola and asked for financial assistance to facilitate travel between the islands so they can get the requisite training on the state-of-the-art facilities on Tortola.

In response to Flax-Charles’ concerns, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports indicated that there are no plans in place to develop tracks on the sister islands. However, work is being done on other facilities like the swimming pool on Virgin Gorda which is also set to be completed with the help of a donor.

The Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Shari de Castro expressed that she will approach the Department of Youth Affairs, Sports and Recreation Trust as well as the Sister Islands Coordinator to see how they can work together to give athletes more access to sports facilities while the requisite funding is sought to fix the facilities or to construct new ones.

You are a part of the government and has been for the last 3.5 years. Money was used for all kind of nonsense that you sanctioned. Why didn’t you do something about getting the facility done? What really do you have to show VG for being there for 4 years. Not even the shed at Trellis Bay you and Vincent got built for us. When it rains we get wet. When it’s sun we have to run from
It. Not even a damn shed after 4 years? Give me a big fat break woman.
