Photograph: Angela Weiss/AFP/Getty ImagesThe 24-year tenure of Dr. Ralph Gonsalves as Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has ended as the New Democratic Party (NDP) has defeated the Gonsalves-led United Labour Party (ULP) in the country’s general election on Thursday.
NDP leader Dr. Godwin Friday is set to become the country’s seventh prime minister since independence in 1979, after his party clinched nine parliamentary seats in a closely fought contest.
The result brings an end to Gonsalves’ historic run in office, during which the ULP governed continuously since 2001.
The NDP’s campaign focused heavily on the economy, job creation and crime, themes that appeared to resonate with voters seeking a new direction after more than two decades of ULP rule.

Yes. NDP Winners. Lorna has already defected to.join them!!
Any person enters politics/government service and comes out a multi millionaire is a stealer and corrupt.
Agree, but which of them don’t????? Every single one of them help themselves, some more than some and it’s a bloody shame.
REGARDLESS OF OF GOOD YOU ARE OR HOW BAD YOU ARE CAN WIN FOREVER , WE ALL HAVE VTO UNDERSTAND THAT , ( SOMETIMES , POWRE GOES TO THE HEAD ALONG WITH CORRUPTION , WHICH IS A BAD COMBINATION )• HONEST AND INTEGRITG IS ALWAYS A BETTER COMBINATION •
I firmly believe that all elected leaders should be limited to two(2) terms. After that two term ends, they should move on and allow fresh minds the opportunity to serve.
What I have observed with these long time politicians is that they never voluntarily step down. They have to be pushed out. In this case, he was pushed out in the most embarrasing way by a landslide.
He was fortunate the landslide did not overtook him, but the thought of going from the most powerful elected official in the country to the least and standing in the Opposition all alone must be an embarrasing feat.
I wouldnt be able to hold my head up after such an embarrasing defeat. I would resign and let someone else take my seat at that point.
Many of these politicians go into politics broke with hardly two pennys to rub together, and in short time, they amass lots of wealth.
To my Vincentian brothers and sisters, let me say this to you: job well done! You spoke loud and clear. You kicked your former leader to the curb in grand style. You even swore in your new leader the next day not wasting any time.
Who don’t want to leave after serving a decent time in office, and still want to keep going despite their advancing age, this is what you get. A kick in your political behind by the collective electorate.
Good for you St.Vincent. A good black fish dinner is in order.
You are absolutely right about most of your comment, except the fact that Ralph did not go in broke. His family was always well off, but I agree he amassed lots more. At this point, I too would resign. He now needs to go.
But on the flip side, a Government without an Opposition, can go very unchecked and when this happens, there is the potential to steal from and rape the country’s coffers. But let them have their turn and hope they don’t take too much.
