Government’s free water delivery extended to June

Government has extended its free water delivery service to residents in the British Virgin Islands from April to June.

Premier Andrew Fahie made that announcement while detailing a number of decisions made by Cabinet recently.

“We decided that the service of free water delivery continues for all customers of the Water & Sewerage Department until June 1, 2020. We know that this is a necessity for the people,” Premier Fahie stated.

In a subsequent interview with BVI News, Minister of Utilities Kye Rymer said the decision was made to ensure that persons within the community will have the ability to access free water as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

“The decision was simple, as you go through this COVID-19 … we encourage the use of washing your hands, and we thought that was necessary to assist the general public in ensuring that your hands are being washed,” Rymer stated.

The minister also said residents have been responding well towards the free access to water initiative.

“Anything that can assist with the COVID-19 and it would be less of a bill to many residents within the territory, so the reception has been quite well and we continue to do the best that we can as a government, he added.

Rymer had initially announced in March that residents in areas affected by interruptions in the water distribution network were not going to be charged for water delivery for a period of 30 days.

That free period was scheduled to end on April 19.

Explain how this will be done for those where Government water cannot be accessed due to the terrain / no pressure to pump the water up a person’s hill. Will water trucks be sent to homes?

The economy has already crumbled. No tourists, no ships, no charter boats, no hotel and BnBs all equals no money. We are broke as a nation and our government has written us off.

Are we safe? Maybe. But can we recover financially? It’s becoming more doubtful.

I am grateful to wake up everyday and have running water coming to my residence. All I ask that when everything dies down that the steady flow of water does not die as well.

  4. Vision says:

This water delivery is only being provided to persons with meters and who have an account with W&SD, If you don’t have an account crap-ow smoke your pipe.

On the other hand there is a cost to every thing. The government is paying these truck man to deliver the water to the people homes, what will the customers themselves pay? How will government make back that money wait’s to be seen.

I also feel that water should have been provided to non customers as well for a fee lower that what the truck man them charging and that would have been extra revenue going into the treasury.
