Governor asked whether he plans to suspend the constitution

Governor John Rankin was yesterday asked whether he plans to suspend the BVI’s constitution before departing the territory at the end of this year.

The Governor, who has been overseeing the good governance reforms recommended by the United Kingdom, has constantly bemoaned the slow implementation of the changes. He has also reminded elected leaders that the UK could suspend the territory’s constitution if they aren’t satisfied with the progress made.

At a press conference yesterday, political commentator and media owner Cindy Rosan asked Governor Rankin whether he has plans to suspend the territory’s constitution and whether residents should expect any surprise actions as he heads towards the end of his tenure.

In response, Governor Rankin said: “The short answer to your question is that I remain fully committed to carrying out my responsibilities as Governor for the remainder of my term of duty. As it regards the issue of the reform programme, I remain committed to playing my part and working in cooperation with the Premier to ensure that the reform process succeeds.”

Governor Rankin began his tenure in 2021. Much of his time in office has been marked by the fallout from the historic Commission of Inquiry and the good governance reforms that were handed down with it. The Governor has held firm to his position that the elected leaders aren’t moving swiftly enough to implement the reforms and even stated that he may draw on additional powers to get necessary changes implemented.

This displeased Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley who has since reported the Governor’s statements to the United Nations and has sought backing from regional bodies such as the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Orders in Coumcil are modern day slavery whips and they must be banned as anyone who uses them or supports them are supporting slavery and not democracy. Slavery has heen abolished. Don’t forget the UK also has one for the financial services. This does not reflect a modern partnership.

  13. The Colonialist says:

We must leave the words “suspend the constitution” alone. We must not think of or utter them. What is not yours leave alone.

If that document was ours, no one could have such freedom to do with it as he she saw fit to disenfranchise us.

If the constitution were suspended, the BVI would be invaded with the British army, marines and air force with vicious Black people hating white men. Our fate would be destruction and death. It will be no Anguilla.

Suspension of the so called constitution will trigger many, many complication of political, financial, human, civil and social rights, to name a few:

    1) With the suspension all our political institutions would be dissolved and a foreign government that hates Black people will come in, set shop and take control of the entire political apparatuses of our country. Is that what we the people want?

    2) With the suspension all our financial institutions will be coopted seized and taken over by the Black man hating British that we will never ever regain control of.

    3) With the suspension all our human rights will be suspended. We will have no ability to question anything or anyone. We will be arbitrarily picked up, arrested and put away never to be seen again in most instances. We will lose our right to speak up and out. We will lose our right to oppose tyranny and more that will surely be confronting us. We will lose the ability to freely travel.

    4) We will lose all our civil and social rights. We will become prisoners in this land we thought was our home.

Trust not. Read the history from the 12th century to present, then decide if that man is a creature that should or can be trusted, especially knowing that he still harbors so much vile hatred in heart and mind for us te Black people of the earth..

Last, if they can suspend any document and put us back centuries and into abject misery, then we need to begin thinking about our own survival.

All of the HOA both sides of the house have condemned the Auditor Generals reports ( shooting the messenger) defending the. Indefensible. It’s time for the Governor to protect the BVI’s populous and international credibility and let the UK step in and stop the blatant corruption of these arrogant so called representatives and their cronies who were bribed to vote them in bizarrely with their own & majority non voters pension funds .

  20. lol says:

Not his call. Whitehall will make that call based on the ineptitude and incompetence of this and the last Government and their failure to abide by the agreements that they both suggested and agreed to. It is a national embarrassment how our members rail against good governance and transparency and the blatant corruption, nepotism, and theft alleged in the AG’s reports.

You are the one fear mongering by bringing race into this. It is nothing about race. It’s about making sure our administration is accountable for it’s actions and that our money that we give them is used wisely and benefits us all. Unfortunately it seems that the only people benefitting are the politicians and their families. Bit no, you decide to turn your back to all the corruption and blame outsiders and play the race card. How friggin ignorant. I guess your part of the problem too.
