Governor notes improved conditions at His Majesty’s Prison
Governor Daniel Pruce has highlighted improvements in conditions for both inmates and officers at His Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut following a recent visit to the facility.
“The Governor was delighted to see progress made in improving the workshop, as well as some recent woodwork undertaken by inmates,” the Office of the Governor stated on March 6.
Governor Pruce also commended Prison Superintendent Jay Kendall and his team for their efforts to transform the prison into a center for rehabilitation. There have also been ongoing discussions to enhance family visitation arrangements.
This week, the Governor met with Minister of Health and Social Development Vincent Wheatley to explore ways to further support the prison and its rehabilitation programmes. Their discussions also included strategies to prevent recidivism.
The Governor’s assessment follows a comprehensive UK-funded support package launched in December 2024, aimed at strengthening prison security, safety, and staff protection.
As part of these efforts, Lee Pilkington, Head of the National Locking Section for the UK Ministry of Justice (MoJ) Property Directorate, visited the Balsam Ghut facility. He provided specialized tools and expertise to bolster security measures, aligning them with standards used across the UK prison estate.
Additionally, prison officers at His Majesty’s Prison have been equipped with state-of-the-art radios and upgraded ID cards. The radios improve communication and coordination, while the ID cards enhance security by enforcing stricter access controls.
According to the Governor’s Office, the new radios have already played a crucial role in intercepting contraband items such as mobile phones, drugs, weapons, and alcohol.
