Governor’s threat was set to align with Andrew Fahie trial, Premier suggests

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has posited that he believes the governor’s announcement to seek additional powers over the BVI was strategically planned to align with the trial of former premier Andrew Fahie, which is set to get underway in a Miami court soon.

Premier Wheatley said such a move is typical of the UK and may also be seen as a psychological tool.

“I think it’s really psychological, for instance, the timing of this (announcement from the governor). Andrew Fahie’s trial is set to start somewhere around now. I don’t take these things for granted in terms of how they plan these things,” Premier Wheatley said on the Talking Points radio show recently.

He also hinted at a possible trend for outgoing governors to make a major decision when departing the territory.

“The only thing I can come up with is that they have a particular method of doing things and some of it may be psychological. For instance, when Augustus Jaspert was leaving, he [announced the COI]. It’s almost as if they don’t have to deal with the consequences of their decisions and you can’t really hold somebody else accountable for those decisions,” Premier Wheatley added.

Fahie was arrested on drug trafficking charges in 2022 and shortly afterwards, the Commissioner of Inquiry (COI), which was already underway in the BVI, delivered its final report to the governor and ordered the suspension of the territory’s constitution.

Local leaders eventually succeeded in stopping the UK from suspending the constitution but many, including the late Carvin Malone, maintained that the COI results were pre-planned to align with the capture of Fahie.

Outgoing Governor John Rankin has denied these allegations, saying he knew nothing about the capture of former premier Fahie.

Woke up this morning believing I was having a long rough nightmare …. sadly I woke up to the fact that it was never a nightmare, it was in fact a cold hard reality, which makes it all much more frightening.

Natalio Wheatley give up all the bull you are coming up with because when the UK ready to take over the BVI You, your brother, the UN and anyone else you are crying to wont stop it, and from speaking with people and reading the blogs a lot of us would love that. The Turks and Caucus is doing very well after they took them over and got rid of all the crooked politicians, I am sure they were lied to by the crooked politicians like we are been lied to by our crooked politicians a takeover would put us on the right track.

This statement makes no sense. The Office of the Governor is an institution. The new Governor will not come in and say ohh I did not make that decision so you cannot hold me accountable. The Office of the Governor should be held accountable, not the person so it does not matter who is in the seat. There are other reasons for the timing of these things but it is not to avoid accountability.

How could BVI become self dependent? If the economy is solely based off of tourism and taxes. What would a independent BVI look like and how could it possibly stay funded.
