Minister of Health Carvin Malone

As the territory’s active COVID cases surpass the 1,300 mark, the Ministry of Health and the Health Emergency Operations Center will be hosting a virtual stakeholder meeting today, January 13 from 2:30 pm to 5:30.

In a press release issued yesterday, government said the meeting was being held to inform stakeholders of the current and emerging COVID-19 surge and its impact territory-wide.

The latest COVID-19 statistics place the territory’s active case count at 1,387.

Tortola continues to lead the rise in cases at 1,094 persons, with 232 reported cases on Virgin Gorda and four cases on Jost Van Dyke, which has seen no change since the last report.

Notably, cases have tripled on Anegada, moving from 19 several days ago to 57 cases as published in the Health Ministry’s COVID-19 dashboard released yesterday at 6 pm.

Gov’t to share economic measures considered by Cabinet

Meanwhile, Health Minister Carvin Malone has said: “We want to engage with the key sectors to give them an update on what is happening with regards to COVID-19 while providing a forum for them to share their concerns and suggestions.”

The meeting will also provide an opportunity for participants to be updated and informed of existing and proposed health protocols and economic measures being considered by Cabinet, the release said.

“We want to make sure that we give this opportunity to stakeholders to have an input in the way we move forward with the management of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Minister Malone stated.

After the Government made a ‘frig’ of the whole process from in the beginning – March 2020 – by keeping stakeholders out.

Watching USA and following their every move wouldn’t work. They are in a COVID-19 predicament themselves.

Why can’t Customs have virtual meetings with the marine stakeholders instead of ‘mandatory’ indoor meetings? The Health Dept. can do it so why can’t Customs?

  6. Jingle Bells says:

Are we not all stakeholders in our own personal health?

Ultimately, why can the Government not show some leadership, take some responsibility and make some tough decisions. By having meeting after meeting and doing little, it seems the intention is simply to shift the blame.

By now we should have a good understanding of the virus and its effects. A lot of people have contracted the virus and the symptoms last them a couple of days: head ache, fever, etc. after that, the symptoms disappear. It’s just like the flu. We should not overreact to it. Sweden never locked down and they have coped with the pandemic very well. Now Israel is proposing massive infestation in order to immunize its entire population. The virus is not as severe now as when it first came out let’s not panic.

When the Government doesn’t include or involve the public we bash them. When they include and involve the public we bash them. Some of us in the BVI do not know what we want. The Government is doing the right thing with this move.
