Gov’t committed to rooting out ‘possibility’ of corruption

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

The Government of National Unity has committed itself to removing any prospect of corruption among its ranks.

This is according to Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, who said in the House of Assembly recently, that the society is calling for greater transparency and the government is providing that greater transparency.

“We are completely committed to rooting out even the possibility of corruption, even the possibility of abuse of office,” Premier Wheatley stated.

Commenting further on the new Register of Interests (ROI) legislation that was being put forward, Premier Wheatley said that persons serving in public life, including legislators, often had a thankless task while making sacrifices for the territory.

He was also keen on emphasising that the scope of the legislation did not just apply to legislators, but to other categories of persons serving in public life.

“The calls for transparency from elected officials will now extend to others in public life, where you will have to declare what assets you have and those of your family, your immediate family,” the Premier stated.

The Premier said he believes very firmly that measures being taken by the government now will not only strengthen its institutions but the fabric of the BVI society as well.

He said it will also demonstrate confidence to the public and supporters that the territory can govern itself and elevate its governance to a level which will make its people proud.

In the meantime, ROI legislation also includes fines and penalties which he said was necessary in helping legislators remain accountable in making the necessary declarations of their interests.

Deputy Premier Kye Rymer said the proposed bill will accompany the previously passed Integrity in Public Life Act.

Rooting out corruption is all good. We need more than rooting out. We need the system fix so corruption doesn’t return. People have to be held accountable.

  6. Really? says:

It’s impossible to remove corruption from the BVI government. The word ‘corruption’ is a broad term that includes: bribery, lobbying, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, parochialism, patronage, influence peddling, graft and embezzlement.

Despite the CoI recommendations lobbying, cronyism, nepotism, parochialism, patronage, influence peddling and graft are SOP in the BVI government. Prime example is the Premier and the BVI’s UK rep in London.

Did the lady from the Tourist Board ever repay the $ 500,000.00 she embezzled or was her sentence of prison with work-leave all?

  7. Mia Mia Amor says:

Here is the two likely answers to the bvi woes. Allow Barbados prime minister the great Mia Amor Mottley to run your country. She has the ability to run both countries at least for a two year period. This is a lady who the world will listen to. She can take Britain off your backs within a month. The bvi is completely void of the intellectual capacity to take themselves out of the mire.

Change your constitution to have senators. Import experts to run your ministries you are brain drained. When you had persons with the likes of VW mascarading as a minister it shows you how far mired in the cesspool you have become. You have a junior Facebook minister who only contribution is daily Facebook postings of little relevance.

You are a proud people with nothing to be proud about. You had finance ministers whose only claim to fame was teaching mathematics who had to take a calculator to calculate what is ten percent of a figure.all he had to do was to take a primary school pupil along with him.

You have a present minister who did not even teach arithmetic at primary school. Hope you are getting my point. Cuss me if you like and then thank me for the suggestion. You are welcome.

  12. Licker and Sticker says:

Well, if this is your stance Slow Wande, then we need fresh elections and a level of constitutional Reform this place may not be ready for. It would include as soon as possible calling fresh elections and getting rid of the Unified Idiots who usurped power currently in charge. Then a massive educational campaign whereby ppl are not only shown what is available to them but they have a say in what happens.

  13. Virgin Island Day says:

Listen to Mrs P speech and her ideology of a VI and you would get a better understanding of why the BVI has so much hate, bitterness , cronyism , nepotism etc …
Because of her I stopped attending graduation for years as an education when she insulted teachers by saying in her speech “
We are foreign and cannot relate to the students “

We are all African or Indian descent who were enslaved and can relate to pain, suffering, hardship. We have more in commonality than differences
I respect her contribution to the Bvi but she helps to create division in a community that has now changed
