Gov’t constructing new facility to house RT police station and HQ

Premier Andrew Fahie has signalled that the Road Town Police Station, which is set to undergo major refurbishment, may also house the territory’s police headquarters in a new facility to be built.

Recently, the UK and BVI governments matched contributions and raised some $70,000 for the enhancement of the Road Town Police Station.

In his budget presentation last week, Premier Fahie hinted that the police headquarters will be housed at the refurbished police station to make law enforcement more efficient.

He said: “It is important that there are adequate facilities for all facets and functions of the police force and to enhance the level of service offered. As such, we will move ahead with the construction of a new facility to house the police headquarters and Road Town Station. This will provide a more resilient facility with all the necessary modern amenities required.”

The current police’s current headquarters at the Sir Olva Georges’ Plaza on Main Street, Tortola was rendered uninhabitable after the September 2017 hurricanes.

The office operated upstairs RiteWay Food Markets in Pasea Estate for some three years before being moved back to its original and now-modernised Main Street location a few months ago.

In the meantime, Premier Fahie said in the coming year, the government will complete “ongoing outfitting works to Custom Headquarters and other related facilities”.

“Your government wants to ensure that there is an adequate working environment for Customs Officers at various locations and to ensure safe access to the public to all Customs facilities.

“This will help to improve the efficiency of Her Majesty’s Customs and enhance the experience of clients, especially those who depend on these services for trade,” Premier Fahie added.
