Gov’t gives land for youth centre on Virgin Gorda

The government recently approved a transfer of crown land on Virgin Gorda for the construction of a youth empowerment centre.

The size of the land was not revealed, but Cabinet documents say the land was granted to the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) Foundation. The foundation will construct and run the centre.

The Cabinet documents also indicate that the building will be built as specified by YEP and must be completed within five years. The government said failure to do so will result in the land being forfeited by the crown.

YEP is a privately funded programme that began operations in 2007. Since its inception, it has provided programming and support to more than 3,000 local youth.

According to the Cabinet documents, when the decision was being made to grant the land to YEP, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Trade and Labour, Lorna Smith recused herself from the meeting because of her membership on the board of YEP.

At-Large Representative Stacey ‘Buddha’ Mather is also a YEP leader but wasn’t present at the meeting as he isn’t a member of the Cabinet.
