Gov’t ministers support proposal to give Anegada its own district rep

At least four government ministers have offered support for a proposal that seeks to give the island of Anegada an exclusive district representative.

This was revealed when the ministers held a meeting with residents on the island over the weekend.

Currently, Ninth District Representative, Vincent Wheatley — who also serves as Minister of Natural Resources, Labour & Immigration — has oversight over the islands of Anegada and Virgin Gorda as part of his constituency.

Along with Wheatley, Health Minister Carvin Malone, Works Minister Kye Rymer and Premier Andrew Fahie all offered their support, at least in principle, for moving the initiative forward.

Education Minister, Dr Natalio Wheatley, who was absent from the meeting at the time was not canvassed for his view on the matter.

According to the Ninth District Representative, he was willing to pilot the initiative through the House of Assembly (HOA) once the community could garner enough signatures from residents in support of the motion.

It was a sentiment shared by Minister Rymer, who said the initiative has to be something that the people of Anegada support.

“This government will work with you once it is clear that you want to be your own district and you can work together to choose one from among you to represent in the House of Assembly,” Wheatley said.

He advised the residents that working towards a common goal will empower them once they make the decision to move towards becoming their own district.

“I firmly believe until you can choose one from among you to represent you, you will not move to the next level in the way you are supposed to. Think about what I’m saying.” Wheatley stated.

Meanwhile, Premier Andrew Fahie said no one should stand in the way of the measure once it was something that residents want.

  3. Hmmm says:

Anegada has 5 elected reps, and for thier current district rep to say that they cannot get true representation unless they elect their own is a sad commentary on those who are now elected. And these views are expressed by the govt in power.

Another demonstration of poor leadership. The government would be more useful to actually pretend as if they care for the people of Anegada by saying we hear you, we have been ineffective, we will start to be attentive to your needs through the current elected officials by doing A, B, and C. The government is instead saying, we don’t care, do what you want, we support whatever you want because we not willing to do the work. In fact, better for us. A crying shame.

Instead of a proposal to give Anegada its own district representative why not give consideration to an Island Council or something of that nature.

Typical f**kry! Labour cannot process permits in the height of tourist season and hear the bull f**k they are here speaking about. You have a situation where businesses that have suffered almost 2 years are finally trying to ready themselves for the season and roadblocks galore. They brag about an online system where you have to make an appointment to pay $50! Online application process but you have to wait days or weeks after you applied online, to stand in a line to pay $50. What the F**K?

On the topic of representatives, we have had sister-island coordinators for how long now, what’s the problem? Why would an island with 300 people need a rep for themselves? The current reps just need to do their f**king jobs. We have 4 at-large representatives in HOA, what are they doing? If you ask me we should scrap the at-large system, appoint sister-island coordinators with some teeth and get on with the business of the Territory. All the gimmicky bulls**t worked in the past but people are becoming wiser to the nonsense and are sick of it.

This site is brewing a whole bunch of obsessed idiots dedicated to bad mouthing government on every article. It is getting beyond ridiculous because the government isn’t wrong all the time. This is the same bad energy that happens on the yellow site but just in reverse. The people of Anegada or at least the ones that attended the meeting are the ones that brought up having their own representative. This isn’t something that was on the government’s agenda. People are so quick to be outraged that they ignore facts to push their narrative smh.

    • Okay says:

Jost van Dyke and salt island need separate reps too.

    • Dont sound like a cow says:

Simple. If the government was doing their job, the sister islands would not feel that way. The government is a big failure. People only calling it as they see it. The one who appointed himself as the saviour for the Caribbean people on reparations, the wind rush, slavery, he cannot even serve the population of Anegada? Think about it. What do you do when exposed as a thi**ing l**r? You do a 180 to appear as the saviour. To think it would really work is the scary bit. Well, at least it gave possible insight into the minds of alleged narcissistic, egotistical, moomoo-ists.

Anegada hosting lots of meetings to show they are together but let’s get real? A smokescreen at best. The Government breathing a sigh of relief. The people complained about principals now we have our own and the school in chaos but the people quiet. The Government knows it too but this was never about the kids was it? It was too stressful paying all that rent and having persons who didn’t like the island and who the people rallied against though for good reason, as they never send their best, only those they do not really want or need at the time. Leftovers. But Anegada has proven its weakness long time and the officials know that. They may complain about school, medical, ferries, roads but the land is their main focus and it is with this in mind they will band together and get exactly what they ask for. Well, not quite, but by the time they realize this last tidbit the chips would have already fallen. Be mindful. Be smart. There is more to life than just the material wealth you all craving.

What is it the people really want? 4 at large and 1 district rep. You mean nobody is representing? Shameful

they picked a successful fight with Gus, (but left $700m of urgently needed investment on the shelf), legalized gambling (exposing the community to usury and social breakdown), rebranded the Tourist Board, rearranged the Ports (without making any savings), opened up the borders (allowing thousands of Covid infections, and $100 millions of drugs to enter), signed away millions for a non-existent solar project, kept CSC in the manner to which he has become accustomed. Oh, and energized a tidal wave of racist invective from their unhinged cheerleaders. What’s not to like?

Anegadians are more harm then help to their damn selves…. It got one family out there who does vex when anybody else make a dollar more than them.. They cut each other throat daily.. So the task to choose one of their own to represent them will be another dog fight..smh
