Gov’t ministers to attend St Kitts 9th OECS meeting

Education Minister Sharie deCastro

Minister for Education Sharie de Castro and Minister for Health Vincent Wheatley are scheduled to attend the 9th Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Council of Ministers Meeting in St. Kitts and Nevis, starting today, Tuesday, September 10.

According to a press release from the Virgin Islands Government, both ministers will be representing the BVI in their official capacities. Wheatley will participate in the 9th OECS Council of Ministers for Human and Social Development and the inaugural meeting of the Joint Council of Ministers for Health, Human & Social Development, and Education. He has also been invited to co-chair the meeting in his role as Minister for Health. De Castro will attend the meeting in her capacity as Minister for Education.

Wheatley, along with Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Miss Tasha Bertie, will attend the meetings scheduled for September 10-11, under the theme “Regional Development and Sustainability through Quality Education and Social Empowerment.”

In de Castro’s absence, Junior Minister of Culture and Tourism Luce Hodge-Smith will serve as interim Minister for Education from September 10 to Saturday, September 14. This appointment is made in accordance with Section 52 (2) of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007, which stipulates that “The Governor, acting in accordance with the advice of the Premier, shall, by instrument under the Public Seal, appoint Ministers from among the elected members of the House of Assembly.”

Similarly, Dr. Karl Dawson, Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, will temporarily assume Wheatley’s responsibilities, as provided by the same constitutional provisions.

Wheatley emphasised the significance of the meeting, stating, “In the Caribbean, especially within the OECS region, the synergy between ministries and sectors is not just important; it’s essential for sustainable growth. Each sector, whether focused on health, education, or social development, is critical to our society.”

He added, “When these sectors collaborate, we can harness their collective strength, bridge gaps, and build a foundation for resilience. Through such cooperation, we can effectively address the complex challenges our region faces and ensure a brighter, more sustainable future for our people.”

The OECS, established on June 18, 1981, in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis, organises a range of meetings among its member countries. The BVI is an associate member of the organisation.

Every time I read the news, it appears these government ministers are always travelling to some meeting outside of the country. This is crazy.

Why are they travelling so much? I don’t understand what benefit they are deriving from this constant travel clearly at tax payers expense.

Who is running the country and the government when these people are always off island saying they are attending yet again some conference/meeting?

It’s as if the BVI has jumbees they wish to escape. They cannot stay in their own houses for a minute before they run off on another vacation.

How is the country benefitting from all this travel?

Is this what they ran for office to do? Travel..travel…travel?

Something is wrong here. Every minute you look around, they are gone.

If ever this age of internet become useful for video conferencing, up to this day these modern time the government won’t utilize digital platform, and these meeting are instigated by the same colonial lobbyist who control the government initiative Caribbean wide, this commonwealth thing should be disbanded, and the education curriculum is service oriented, so there is no revolutionary plan for education, the health minister is been lobby by big pharmaceutical companies, it’s all business interest instead a the people, these commonwealth and oecs meetings are so insensitive, they just demand that these ministers jump on flights and stay at these expensive American or white own hotel and food catering services, the benifit goes to these white own businesses, the airline etc. it is beneficial externally for white corporations getting this continuous stimulus financially from the Caribbean, and the cariccom secretary is the sell out instigator and beneficiary financially for bringing business to these hotels and food catering services.
