Gov’t offering 3-month amnesty on electricity bills to ‘needy’ consumers

Government and the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) will be granting a three-month amnesty on electricity payments to select consumers.

Premier Andrew Fahie said this is part of the second phase of his administration’s economic stimulus-response to COVID-19.

In a public statement on Thursday, the Premier said: “For the months of May, June, and July, the government, through the BVIEC and its Board, will be granting an amnesty on payments to qualifying individuals and businesses.”

“This will be on a case-by-case basis as businesses and individuals will have to furnish the relevant information to BVIEC and its Board to show how they were affected by COVID-19 based on the criteria that will be published,” Fahie added.

Sifting the needy from the greedy

Premier said the amnesty is being done on a case-by-case basis to ‘ensure that the needy gets help and not the greedy’.

Fahie, in the meantime, said the amnesty will be led and monitored by the BVIEC, adding that more details will follow when government gives a full announcement of Phase Two of its economic stimulus plan on May 28.

“Your government understands the hardship our people are facing during this time, and as promised we will continue to address the major essential needs of our people and local businesses, as much as possible and within the limits of our means as a territory,” he said.

How do anybody prove that they voted for VIP when the ballot was anonymous and phones or other means to take pictures were left outside the polling station. You might be surprised how many people claim to vote for somebody else after the candidate they voted for lose.

I wish the BVIEC would fix their online payment portal to make it more convenient for me to get my bill paid.

If you have an issue, don’t you think it would make more sense to call or email someone that works at BVIEC rather than commenting on a news article that doesn’t really have anything to do with the online portal?

      Just a thought.

Why not just cut the electricity bill in half for everyone(50%)…That’s fair enough, don’t you think?

The labour department knows fully well all who are laid off from their jobs because the company submitted their names there. Why not help those people who were laid off. Why not help the people with children. There are many many rich persons in the BVI yet they will be looking to for amnesty to run their AC.

    Needy from Greedy

I don’t agree with that comment. No one was needy or greedy for covid19. All had to adhere to the rules. Some of us whether rich or poor lost income from work. There was no unemployment funds set up to give us. We suffered in Hurricane Irma and Maria and now Covid19 because of saying just like that. Especially folks who are not in close contact with the ministers and their entourages, don’t get the needed assistance. Needy and greedy are the ministers and their colleagues. Friends looking out for friends. Mark my word, when all is said and done the reports will be destroyed to coverup colleagues and entourages.

  10. Ummmm this is some BS says:

So what qualifies a family as needy not greedy? If your salary got cut in half of to a quart would someone be expected to show their salary information to BVI electricity or provide their last three months pay slip and a letter from their employer to BVI electricity? I think this is too much what qualifies a person? Salary is private. VIP moving like a communist party. Who don’t like it lay down by it. I said it.
