Gov’t praises 284 Media as entity suspends news service

The Dr Natalio Wheatley government has praised 284 Media for its contribution to keeping the public informed after the company announced that it has suspended its news service.

284 Media announced that effective September 30, it was pausing 284 News, including its weekly news roundup, daily news posts and news packages. The company described the move as a necessary pause to “reflect, renew and reimagine” how it reports news and facilitates national conversations.

“This is not goodbye,” 284 Media said, noting that it will continue providing sports, entertainment and live coverage while considering the future of its news operation.

In a message published on the Premier’s Office official Facebook page, the government recognised 284 Media’s journalists and their contribution to public discourse. “Through the years, 284 Media’s journalists have joined us at press conferences, asked questions and carried stories about the work of government to the wider community,” the statement said.

It added: “Their presence in the room, and the coverage that followed, have helped keep the public informed and engaged.”

The suspension comes amid continuing challenges for media businesses in the BVI. Most operate relatively small newsrooms and depend heavily on advertising dollars from a limited number of businesses, many of which are themselves grappling with rising operating costs and other economic pressures.

Traditional media houses have also faced challenges securing consistent access to government officials and information, as elected leaders have traditionally stayed away from media houses that deliver heavy scrutiny.

284 Media did not attribute its decision to financial difficulties or government access. Instead, the company said it intends to develop new ways of reporting news, telling local stories and facilitating national conversations.

The government is praising 284 Media’s contribution, but this loss of another independent news voice should concern all of us. Whether this decision was driven by financial pressures, frustration in gaining access to information, or a combination of challenges faced by media organisations, it represents a significant loss to the public.

Independent journalism plays an important role in reporting on what is actually happening in the community, not just what our government chooses to announce when things are going well. So many important matters remain hidden from the public, and without a strong media presence, there is less scrutiny, less transparency, and fewer opportunities to hold them accountable.

We need more independent reporting and greater access to information, not less.

You sound good but people don’t work for free. It seems so many think businesses just operate off sunlight or some miracle.

  2. Not surprised says:

They are sending praises to their friends at 284. Those people always asked easy questions. Nothing serious.
