Gov’t prepares for seaport reopening with simulation exercise

The BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) in partnership with other government agencies recently conducted a simulation exercise of how the Road Town Ferry Terminal will operate when it reopens to international traffic next month.

This exercise comprised the Immigration Department, Her Majesty’s Customs, local health authorities, the BVI Tourist Board, and ferry operators.

“This was part of the preparation for the reopening of the Road Town seaport to International Ferry Passenger traffic on April 15, 2021,” the BVIPA said in a media release on Monday.

News of this exercise might be is the clearest indication in months that the BVIPA plans to honour its commitment of reopening the seaport as scheduled, this time around.

The Authority had first announced that the Road Town Ferry Terminal would resume accepting international traffic on December 8. They deferred that date to January 21 and again to March 1.

A week before their March 1 schedule, the BVIPA then pushed the reopening by another month-and-a-half.

In the meantime, domestic and international ferry traffic will be operating from separate locations when the BVI’s Road Town-based seaport reopens.

Domestic ferry operations will be routed through Cyril B Romney Tortola Pier Park while international ferry operations will remain at the Road Town Jetty.

The BVIPA said this decision represents “best safety-measure practices”.
