Gov’t seeks to strengthen relationship with UN

Government is planning to strengthen the BVI’s relationship with the UN as part of the territory’s 2030 developmental objectives.

According to BVI diplomat Benito Wheatley, Premier Andrew Fahie had given that indication when he and Wheatley attended the United Nations Caribbean Regional Seminar on Decolonization in Georgetown, Grenada on May 2 and 3.

That visit marked the first time a BVI premier has attended the seminar. The seminar was used to examine issues of self-determination in the United Nations’ list of 17 Non-independent countries in which the BVI is classified.

In addressing delegates at the seminar, Premier Fahie said: “The relationship between the BVI and UK is not one that should be limited to engagement between the two sides. Our relationship requires the international accountability that is provided for by the UN decolonisation framework. This Caribbean regional seminar is an integral part of that process.”

Fahie also expressed gratitude to the UN and its affiliate agencies such as the UNDP, UNICEF, PAHO and ECLAC for their contributions to the recovery effort of the territory since the devastating impact from the natural disasters of 2017.

He also held a bilateral meeting with Her Excellency Ambassador Keisha McGuire who is the Permanent Representative of Grenada to the United Nations and the Chairwoman of the Special Committee on Decolonisation.
