Gov’t spending $24K to modernise Labour laws

The government is modernising its Labour laws and will be spending at least $24,000 to do it.

That money will be paid to an Italian university professor, Michele Tiraboschi who has been hired to provide consultancy services for the project.

Tiraboschi is required to collaborate with the Attorney General Chambers to draft a “revised and simplified” Labour Code for the Virgin Islands.

His duties also include drafting Labour regulations for the territory’s construction and marine industries.

He is further required to develop a National Organisation Health & Safety regulation consistent with the International Labour Organisation standards.

Tiraboschi’s consultancy took effect March 24 this year.

He is or has served as a Professor of Labour Law & Industrial Relations at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy.

That’s what happen when people are placed in a position because of who they are and not what they could bring to the table.

It also happens when people don’t get what they want. They use consultancy to get around doing the right thing.
Sometimes some things just need consultancies.

If we need consultants for everything, it’s time for our departments to get a revamp

Interesting, so work permit holders are basically treated as slaves. Locked out the country for most part of 2020.

But government can bring in consultants as they like.

    Smells like corruption to me.

And people cant collect their severance pay, NHI, TAXES and PAY RAISE AND DON’T FORGET THE INCREMENTS!

    • Howdy doody says:

Increments are pay rises for civil servants who do such a poor job that they don’t get a salary increase.

Will the construction and marine industries be consulted or will this consultant write a report with having no clue on how the BVI operates?

So 1/3 of the population (the Belongers) write the labor code. Now they pay for a consult to rewrite it…
If you are not born here the deck is stacked against you. This $24K is not going to change a thing for us non-belongers. Why not just keep the system the way it is? At least we have figured out how to swallow our pride and make it through your goofy process, after doing it for 15 years…this ‘new’ process is just going to end up being more work – with the same result.
