Gov’t takes major steps to fix water woes

There is renewed hope for residents affected by serious faults in the water distribution system, as the government has announced that it is taking steps to carry out leak detection and remediation works on Tortola.

The Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) is now inviting eligible and qualified consulting firms to submit technical and financial proposals for leak detection and remediation works on the water network on the main island.

This assignment will consist of the following four main components:

i. Training for the identification of leaks within the portable water infrastructure.

ii. Provision of equipment for the ongoing leak detection by the Water and Sewage Department.

iii. Leak detection activity

iv. 12-months post training support

According to the government, the primary objective of the project is to develop local contractors and the staff of the Water and Sewerage Department so they can effectively carry out leak detection and remediation within the BVI.

A request for proposals stated that the water supply system in the BVI has been a challenging resource to manage for a long, long time.

“For years, the Water and Sewerage Department has run at a deficit, with the government subsidizing the production of water. Metering and demand management are not well developed, which results in a reactive response to water supply issues,” the notice from the RDA said.

Residents have long bemoaned water infrastructure and supply in the BVI, saying successive governments have neglected the challenges, which have now reached a crisis level.

Businesses have also been complaining, saying they have been spending valuable financial resources to get reliable water despite the monthly amounts they pay to get potable water from the government.

These VI have been in violation for decades.

Water, from observation, is now a commodity sold by ,I am guessing and probably perhaps, fast boat operators and drug dealers and factually exorbitant prices from large modern mobile units…made for the job expensive water trucks dispersing suitably expensive water to the “least can afford.”

As a result, it is unlikely that these private businesses will be interrupted by a functioning municipal water system, The shiite will continue.

  6. Peek Hours? says:

Leaks? So, there are only leaks in the morning, afternoon and on weekend’s causing no water? That make sense? I don’t doubt leaks are an issue for pressure, but only during certain times of the day or on weekends? Stop lying and just say we need to focus on leaks as well! As this too is causing water issues.

No matter what government in… they should be shamed of talking about fixing water woes. Much less sewerage woes. Sound like a broken record. Just fix the issues and let the public be thankful after. Always talking piss.
