Gov’t to start public meetings about COI proposals on June 20

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has announced his Government of National Unity will begin community meetings regarding the implementation of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report recommendations.

In a live broadcast a short while ago, Dr Wheatley said the meetings will start June 20.

He said while he is aware that the United Kingdom (UK) government has not made any action regarding the implementation of the recommendations in the COI report, he remains optimistic and continues having constructive discussions with Governor John Rankin.

And as discussions continue to take place with the UK, the Premier said it is important that his Government of National Unity visit each district and sister island to discuss the final proposal submitted to the United Kingdom.

“I previously outlined our proposed approach but there are fine details that we must discuss. These town hall meetings will give you a direct forum to share your direct perspectives and ideas on how we can reform government and improve the Virgin Islands,” the Premier said in his address to the public.

“We want to engage you on changes in the ways government handle the public’s business. Not only do we want to hear your feedback, but we want to hear how you think the public should be involved in the reform process. Your feedback will be key to our work as a government going forward,” Dr Wheatley added.

He noted that reform will not be the only thing on the agenda at these town hall meetings. Dr Wheatley further said he wants to hear from the public regarding their views on schools, healthcare, the environment, and the business climate.

“These are issues that affect you and your family’s daily lives and livelihoods. We want to know how we can best improve things. We are also conscious that a lot has happened and changed in our society in just a few short weeks,” Dr Wheatley said.

“You are entitled to the opportunity to express your concerns, share your reflections and ask questions about things that are important to you, especially now the situation has stabilized somewhat,” he added.

This is the equivalent of a child rushing to clean up their room because their parents told them they’re in trouble for not cleaning it. The COI found that our government was quite frankly irredeemable from the top down. I don’t think any sort of action our government makes will ultimately affect what the UK’s decisions will be. It feels like posing before the UK finally puts its foot down.

I suspect we are about to see some more fairly earth shattering revelations and arrests before the final decision is announced.

      Stand by.

  2. Stabilized? says:

He can’t be serious. The ‘situation’ is more unstable now than on 29 April 2022. 12 suspect criminals in the HOA trying to appear as decent law abiding politicians after working hand in glove with inmate Fahie to destroy the BVI. Don’t worry though the UK will swoop in and save the day later this month.

What makes you both certain the UK will ‘swoop in’ and ‘put it’s foot down’?

Heaven itself knows that WE don’t have the resources and the HOA doesn’t have the will to bring about reform in any substantive way. We are indeed ‘unstable’.

I’m feeling pretty hopeless right now, watching us go round in meaningless circles listening to meaningless talk.
Do you know something the rest of us don’t?

    • Licker and Sticker says:

The UK is probably not giving them positive feedback and so they now turn to us like chopped liver to try and drum up public support for ideas that are no inline with good governance.

Slow Wande and this bunch of id**ts that put themselves in charge playing games. Well they playing with themselves

  4. Open criticism says:

If all the HOA knowing what they knew then and now claiming to know what’s right now weren’t brave enough to put their heads above the parapet for fear of having it blown off for merely criticising other members of their own government. How would any sane member of the public risk their own work permit or future status to tell you the obvious truths you already know . All your friends and family who will turn up at these so called “public meetings” do not represent real public opinion.Read the COI report ,hang your heads in shame ,resign on mass knowing it’s in the REAL PUBLIC INTEREST!

  5. Licker and Sticker says:

They need to first start why the heck would you hire a lawyer to a COI which isn’t a hearing. They wasted 8 mil of our tax dollars fighting a financial review. What kind of records or lack thereof do we have if we can’t get financial reports and numbers done in a timely fashion in regards to past projects.

What f!cking idiots have we got representing us over the past years including this sham of a government. Slow Wande look like he sleep talking and the rest of them are only platitudes at best.

Then they have to show details as to what is being proposed and that they will all resign effective immediately because I still can’t get over what has come out of this COI.

    • Crazy Joe says:

How much of the $8 million found its way back into their greedy paws.?

After all it was just another contract.

And none of those happen without serious kickbacks.
