Gov’t writes $10K cheque for BVIAA

Sports Minister Dr Natalio Wheatley is captured in a motorcade with local athletes.

Government will be delivering on its promise to fund athleticism in the territory by providing a $10,000 cheque for the BVI Athletics Association (BVIAA) to help develop the sport.

This was revealed by Minister of Sports Dr Natalio Wheatley who was speaking at the Recognition Ceremony for the local CARIFTA Games athletes who collectively produced a record seven medals during this year’s games held in the Cayman Islands.

“We’re going to make a serious commitment to the sport because it is a commitment that is given very good returns so I don’t think that we need to hesitate to make that investment. In fact, I do believe that there’s a cheque already ready for you, for the team for the Athletics Association,” Minister Wheatley told the BVIAA.

He said additional funding will be provided from the recently passed budget.

“That’s going to allow me as Minister of Sports to be able to provide you the support to be able to compete at the track meets for the rest of the year … I’m going to make a request for further funds” Minister Wheatley added.

Meanwhile, BVI Athletics Association president Steve Augustine said he is hoping the funds can assist with his goal of increasing the size of the CARIFTA team for the 2020 games.

“I heard him (Dr Wheatley) speak a lot about the Association being in a better financial position. So, come next year, it wouldn’t and shouldn’t be a case that because of financial standing, we are unable to take more athletes.”

President Augustine believes that an increased number of athletes at the games next year will see the existing record number of medals exceeded.
