Govt’s affairs will be reprioritised; projects stopped — Dr Wheatley

The government will have to rejig some of its agenda in order to accommodate recommendations emanating from the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report, Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley has shared.

“We recently sent a proposal to the United Kingdom affirming our commitment to implement the recommendations of the COI report. We are prayerful and hopeful that the United Kingdom and Minister Milling and the (UK) Foreign Secretary Liz Truss would accept our proposal and certainly then we would work to establish timelines,” Dr Wheatley told reporters at a recent press briefing.

He expressed that it was important for people of the BVI to understand that the government will have to reprioritise its affairs; with the implementation of reforms being its number-one priority.

Dr Wheatley also shared that certain things will have to be stopped, considering that the government needs to move forward in a manner that is financially prudent while it simultaneously seeks to become good stewards of the public‘s finances.

Premier Wheatley did not disclose whether any specific projects were being looked at as part of the government’s efforts reprioritise its affairs.

The Premier reiterated that people in the BVI want good governance, transparency, accountability and respect for the rule of law from its leaders.

“They want us to fix the challenges that, as you (journalists) have said, persons have been complaining about for some time,“ Dr Wheatley said.

In the meantime, he explained that the healthcare and infrastructure needs of the territory remain part of the government’s concern.

While describing it as a balancing act, the Premier expressed that the government still has to focus its attention on to continuing to manage the affairs of the people.

The recently released COI report recommended that all major contracts undertaken over the past three years that were approved under the former Andrew Fahie-led government and were valued above $100,000 should be reviewed by the territory’s Auditor General.

Hear this joker. The whole of the vip government is still in government except Andrew who is unreachable at the moment. Why you all trying to act like a new government. You all said that Andrew was not a dictator and that all of you participated in decision making in the government. So why are you trying to now fool people and distancing yourselves from all the previous decisions when you encouraged and supported all the initiatives including the barges. Sowande you were in national security council with Andrew and you strongly supported the barges instead of UK military ships. You were with Andrew and Claude on the anti UK tirade each day. How is it now you trying to act as if you are a new government and you are a new creature? You are just as dec**tful as your former boss. All of you would get instant diarrhea if you hear Andrew get release. Jokers!

Showande you make me s**t with shame. Your government is going to prioritize government affairs? You are not a new comer. You were a tangible part of Andrew Fahie government and sanctioned all his wrong doings and unfairness. Start with dismantling the boards, cancel all those high paid umbrella consultancy contracts, where people are paid to do menial work and walk the streets. Give us the public account for all our money that were siphoned to crooks and croonies, and wasted on projects with no value for money. You want us to look at you through honest eyes? Come clean on everything publicly. If you can’t do that, then we don’t want to hear you.

  6. Ask the people says:

How would u prioritise what needs to be done? If all ah we work on list then it can be debated? Top 5 priorities for territory?

    • Priorities says:

Not sure how wasting money and materials to do a half a$$ job painting some mashed up guard rails on the VG mountain road made the list. Paint peeling off before it dried! Potholes big as a car and we painting rusty broken guardrails. Lack of leadership on VG, what a let down.

  7. Sounds Good. says:

We still have the corrupted people making decisions in all departments,Eliminating those should be priority #1.

What is the status of the West End Ferry Dock? Should that whole plan be properly reviewed?

    • pete says:

West End ferry dock was my first concern. A whole sector of tourist is being ignored and forced to go to Road Town and then come back. If it were a choice between west end ferry dock or messing with the airport, I choose the ferry dock. The airport is too complicated, the approach too short, the noise is deafening from low-flying planes late at night and early in the morning. Then there will be need for a hotel for those waiting flights. restaurants, stores and bye bye trellis bay charm.
