Grade 8 student rescued after attempted jump from ESHS building

A Grade 8 student at the Elmore Stoutt High School was rescued on Tuesday after an incident that authorities said could have proven fatal.

According to reports, the female student attempted to jump from a building on the school’s campus but was stopped before she could.

The student had allegedly consumed a prohibited mixture before the incident. It is further understood that she had been displaying unusual behaviour, which raised concern among persons on the campus.

The situation escalated when the student attempted to jump, prompting immediate intervention.

Emergency responders were called to the scene, including police officers, fire and rescue personnel, and ambulance services. The student’s parents were also present during the incident.

Authorities have indicated that an investigation is underway.

Efforts to obtain a response from Education Minister Sharie deCastro were unsuccessful at the time of the report.

The incident comes against a backdrop of ongoing concerns about substance abuse among students at the high school. Previous reports have highlighted instances where prohibited items were discovered on or near the campus, prompting warnings from education officials.

The minister has previously acknowledged the issue and indicated that measures were being pursued to address drug use in schools, including increased monitoring and student support initiatives.

Incidents involving student welfare have also drawn wider attention in the territory, with calls for stronger counselling services and early intervention systems within the public education sector.

Tuesday’s incident adds to those concerns, as it unfolded within the territory’s main secondary school, which serves a large portion of the student population on Tortola.

No further official details were provided about the student’s condition following the rescue, and authorities have not released additional information pending the outcome of investigations.

  2. Parents and child to blame says:

I know DeCastro is the minister, but what is she to do in this situation? The school doesn’t sell or distribute these things. The children bring them to school, that’s on their parents

Who ultimately is responsible for the safety of the children while they are at school? The parents? Or maybe the grand parents?

Lack of some sort of enforcement is allowing “illegal substances” into the school. Who is responsible for this?

Lay blame where it should be laid. People only want praise, accolades, photo-ops and no criticism.

      • It's on parents says:

If they are found they are confiscated and the student is delt accordingly, this is basic knowledge. Same way police can only be alerted after gun shoots not while the shooting is ongoing. I remember going to school and parents where mad the gate search took too long. How about parents stop being friends with their children and actually be parents

        • Deh Watcha says:

The parent cannot parent on the school campus. I have no problem agreeing on the parents responsibility, but they cannot know what happens after the child is dropped off at school. At that point they become the schools responsibility to an extent.

You think all kids bring their “secrets” home? They probably have stash areas they easily and unnoticeable access within the school compound.

I’ll ask again, who ultimately stopped the searching before entering the school campus? This is where hard decisions and stances are taken. Instead of trying to please an electorate for votes.
