Guyana could lend BVI land for farming

Junior Minister for Agriculture, Dr Karl Dawson.

Junior Minister for Agriculture Dr Karl Dawson has signalled that the BVI could possibly take up Guyana’s offer to use lands in that country for agricultural produce.

Many countries that don’t have enough farmlands have been paying others for land to produce food for their populations.

Speaking at a press conference earlier this week, Dr Dawson said the possibility of BVI farmers producing food in Guyana was discussed when he met with officials there.

“It certainly came up, it’s something that the government of Guyana has on offer. Barbados has space in Guyana for agricultural production. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility as we look for ways to feed ourselves,” Dr Dawson stated.

Guyana recently agreed to allocate 50 acres for Barbados farmers to use for agricultural production. This was met with some criticism from some Guyanese who said the land could have been given to many young people who are in need of opportunities.

In the meantime, Dr Dawson said if the BVI were to produce food in Guyana, cheaper shipping costs would make the venture viable. Currently, it is very expensive to ship to and from Guyana because of the distance from the BVI and because many countries in the region haven’t been conducting high volume trading with Guyana.

With the discovery of oil and the opening up of the Guyanese economy, many are anticipating that shipping costs will become cheaper in the near future.

ridiculous scheme to form an artificial link with Guyana. VIP party members seem obsessed with extracting money from Guyana. Perhaps all the BVI politicians clamoring for independence from the UK should just relocate to Guyana.

These people serious!? nobody leaving BVI to go Guyana go farm. Lets assist agriculture locally with the little we have first then we think about paying other countries for farm land. The point of doing this is food security yes? If something happens this food and farm is still in Guyana. Lets develop BVI!

They really come back here talking about successful trade mission to Guyana. I have yet to hear one thing they talk about that is not a better deal for the Guyanese than it is for us.

  25. lol says:

No Karl. If government wants to set up an offshore farming cooperation in Guyana that is a different story. A couple governments and private investors can put together a corporation and set up a commercial farm in the hinterland to supply foods for global and local markets.

I just gave you some free consultancy.. you can pay me just 25% of what you all paid Claude for nothing to get the rest lol

  33. Dr the mic says:

My dear Dr. From your statement we can see that your doctorate degree is not in common sense. Why would we fram land outside our waters, when we have unutilized fram land here at home. Please yall have to think before you speak on our behalf.

  34. ShakeUp says:

When it comes to Agriculture BVI have land enough to supply in excess, farm products for BVI consumption. Getting tied up with places for food is a bigbg nooo .We need water…that is our weak point..plenty water is what we need,
Places in the Caribbean no matter their windfall resources have been unable to build a solid economy. For reasons deep in the core of their and innate character and soul which can only be addressed by a higher Spiritual Power. No need for us to get wrapped up in an entanglement of futility and c online to self destruct. We need to take a good overhaul of our current immigration policies and go in the direction of revising our demograhic imbalance and for beneficial advances..
We have a a solid history of what has worked positively in the advancement of our economy and society and what demographic has been t h e contributor to detrimental aspects of our economy, society and life in our Islands and make the necessary readjustments going forward.

  35. @ slick says:

Using Guiana’s land is not a necessity for the VI. Rather,it is a form of charitable favour towards their economy. We paying like we always do. Just in case you haven’t noticed BVIslanders by nature, are NOT freeloaders. So far we have been blessed to not become of lesser mindfullness as ungrateful and unreciprocal beggars in foreign lands.

  36. Dog men says:

You all need to tell us what is really going on ! This donot make any sense. Karl we have one best fishing water in the world must we go to Gt. To get that too, or we can invest into it. The government give tax breaks to supermarkets on goods and still the prices gone up. Not down. How can you secure food for one country in other men country.

  37. informed says:

Lets recap on what has investments were done locally. $5M on green houses which grew nothing.
Farmers and fishermen grants which were just given out to friends they went to look for farms and could not find them here. There is another story in the news about evicting farmers off land as they are not growing anything. We need to see a huge improvement in farming here before we start thinking about growing overseas. We have a market selling nothing here empty stalls with nothing to sell.

  38. No, are the people stupid? says:

It’s the population that voted for these politicians that are stupid. The same crooks they complain about expecting them to do better. You all put back the same thieves and now you complaining that they are stealing or they are stupid. They didn’t get into office magically, it’s the stupid population that voted them in. It’s similar to employing a thief to watch your money and then upset that the thief is robbing your money. What did you expect from a thief? I would say the politicians are very smart because it doesn’t take much to fool the BVI VOTING POPULATION. They are doing exactly what they always done and what they went into office to do. It’s more than stupidity, it’s insanity!

  39. Hmmm says:

Why the F we put this man in!!! You want us lend land in another country to farm for the BVI!! An we can do it here!! Are you a fool?! Or a semen sucker?!!!

  41. Fan says:

Truth be told, I am a Fan of Dr. Dawson and a Man I respect. But it seems like ever since he got elected he has been making some utterances that to me make no sense whatsoever. Firstly, the lines about putting the District money back in the hands of Elected officials which we all know full well what went down. Now this. Maybe, if Dr. Dawson explain to us more clearly what he means by this statement about lending Land from Guyana Then, I will retract my statement. Lend Land from Guyana? How will we get this Land to BVI? lol.

  42. Maverick says:

For over a decade, I have strongly felt that small islands can increase their size through acquiring foreign land and using same for farming. My focus used to be South Africa, but Guyana is clearly a great pick. I like the idea especially if it lends to the territory producing its own food and training V. Islanders into all the disciplines relating thereto. If this is possible preference must be given to the farmers so linked including producing in the VI.

  43. Ausar says:

And, we’re SUPPOSED to EAT food grown on soil there?

I was under the impression that Guyanese immigrants left, for a better way of life, due to lack of proper food and economic stuffs..

I’m not understanding, how, their soil, can do a better job of feeding our people, than our own..

I want to believe, this partnership has a lot less to do with foodstuffs, but more with, oil, schemes, and perhaps, financial services..

    #Makeitmakesense#!!

  44. Licher and Sticher Good says:

Premier S**w Wande and the A** Clown Brigade (both Government and Opposition) have little to no creativity or sense.
