Guyana, Venezuela clash over oil reserves

As Guyana continues to chart a course for development resulting from its new-found oil reserves, the country is facing renewed issues with its neighbour Venezuela.

Venezuela and Guyana share a border and have had serious clashes in the past over where territorial lines should be drawn.

Earlier this month, Guyana announced plans to explore oil reserves just off its coast, saying it was going to offer bids to private international oil companies.

This news did not go down well with the Venezuelan government. They called the planning exploration “illegal bidding” saying the reserves are on Venezuela’s side of the border.

Venezuela also noted that any arbitrary concession granted would be “unacceptable” and that “these actions do not generate any type of rights to third parties who participate in such a process.”

The Spanish-speaking nation also said they’ll hold a referendum to get their nation’s view on whether they should defend their sovereignty and fight for the natural resources that line its borders.

In the meantime, Guyana continues to garner support from other countries including the Organization of American States who say they reject Venezuela’s encroachment on Guyana’s territory.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has also defended Guyana, saying that it hopes Venezuela will engage fully in the process before the International Court of Justice, which has determined that it has the jurisdiction over the issues involving both countries.

Guyana has become the new favourite of many countries around the world who are seeking to establish closer ties with the country that is poised to see a growth in its economy due to its oil reserves which are worth trillions of dollars.

The BVI has sought to establish their own ties with Guyana and has even offered to drop visa restrictions for Guyanese as the territory seeks to cash in on the financial services boom that is forecast for Guyana.

The map that you show contains wrong borders between Guyana-Suriname. There is another disputed area there that is unresolved since colonial times. it is misleading to show that area as belonging to Guyana.it must be shown as disputed at least to remain neutral.
