Guyanese community in BVI to host vigil for victims of school fire

The Guyanese community in the BVI will be hosting a vigil on May 26, to honour the 19 students who died in a fire in Mahdia, Guyana earlier this week.

Reports are that the fire broke out some time after midnight on Monday in a dormitory at a secondary school. Scores of students were trapped in the blaze which investigators believe may have been started maliciously.

Several other people were injured and are receiving treatment at hospital. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has extended heartfelt condolences to all who have been affected, both directly and indirectly, by the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mahdia community and all of Guyana as you mourn the deaths of beloved relatives and friends,” a statement from CARICOM said. “We applaud the bravery of personnel from the Guyanese fire, police and medical teams, as well as public-spirited Guyanese, who responded and helped to save lives.”

The Heads of Government of CARICOM say they have mobilized human and other resources to support the recovery process now underway in Guyana.

Members of the BVI community are invited to join the vigil which will be held at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park at 6 pm. Persons are asked to use candles, cell phone lights or simple torches to the event.

lights is a bad idea in this vigil so walk with a small flashlight. A confiscated cell phone is allegedly the reason the young arsonist set the dormitory on fire.
