BVI 100-metre sprinter Tahesia Harrigan-Scott has been applauded for making it to the semifinal round at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Harrigan-Scott had advanced to the semifinals after finishing third with a time of 11.64 seconds in the first round of the event.

She finished behind Jamaica’s Christiana Williams and England’s Corinne Humphreys.

Though running a faster time in the semifinals, it was not enough to qualify the BVI athlete for the 100-metre finals.

But, Harrigan-Scott said she was still pleased with her performance.

“The heat was my first 100 metres of the season [but] I felt good in the second race. My start felt fine, my reaction was good, it’s just the last 30 metres of the race when I really faded and it cost me a better time than I should have run,” Harrigan-Scott said after her semifinal run.

“While I would have liked to have done better I gave it all that I had at that moment,” she added.

Proud

Meanwhile, the BVI Commonwealth Games Association has hailed the 100-metre sprinter as an ‘excellent ambassador’ for the BVI.

“We are exceptionally proud of Tahesia,” said Ephraim Penn, President of the BVI Commonwealth Games Association (BVICGA).

“Her positive attitude and cheerful disposition along with her ethical approach to competition are what we at the BVICGA hope all our athletes will aspire to. We thank Tahesia for being a leader in the VI crop of athletes, and for her commitment to her sport and to the team.”

This is the Harrigan-Scott’s fourth time participating in the Commonwealth Games.

Her two races in this year’s Games took place on Sunday, April 8 at the Carrara Stadium in Australia.

The Games officially started on April 4 and is scheduled to end on the 15.

A team of 10 athletes and officials are currently representing the territory in the international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth.

This is the territory’s eighth time participating since their debut in Auckland, New Zealand in 1990.

It is also the BVI’s first major international event since the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
