Highest CDC warning on BVI’s closest neighbours, gateways

The USVI’s main airport.

Two of the BVI’s closest neighbours have been flagged with the highest travel warning from America’s public health agency, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC).

These countries are the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) and Puerto Rico — both of which are prominent gateways into the British Virgin Islands.

Both countries are listed at Level 4 — which means there is a “very high level” of the COVID-19 in those jurisdictions.

The latest statistics show that Puerto Rico has more than 94,000 active cases of COVID-19 and an overall total that’s in excess of 188,000. Closer to home over in the USVI, reports are that they have about 94 active cases and nearly 3,000 confirmed cases overall.

“Travel [to these countries] increases your chances of getting and spreading COVID-19. CDC recommends that you do not travel at this time,” said the CDC, adding that persons should “avoid travel” to these jurisdictions altogether.

Puerto Rico and the USVI are among 21 Caribbean countries flagged as ‘red’ countries by the CDC.

The others are Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Belize, Bonaire, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St Barthelemy, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia, St Martin, St Maarten, Suriname, and Turks & Caicos Islands.

The BVI, Anguilla, Cayman Islands, Grenada, Saba, Saint Kitts and Nevis and St Eustatius are the only seven Caribbean countries and territories at Level 1. This means they have “low levels” of COVID-19.

The BVI is currently enjoying no active cases and is currently advancing with its vaccination efforts. Based on estimates from the World Bank’s data catalogue which places the territory’s population at 30,030, the BVI has inoculated more than 21 per cent of its populace so far.

The Andrew Fahie administration is credited for its aggressive approach towards managing COVID-19 in the territory.

Pure fearmongering bulls**t. Time to get on with our lives and stop the madness. If it wasn’t for the constant reporting and counting nobody would know that something serious is being spread around the world so what does that tell us?

You sir are the idiot. If the news were to stop reporting and fearmongering for 1 week nobody would know there’s a so called pandemic. Many places have been fully opened for months now with their economies up and running, no masks and are doing just fine.

          You caught the “trump”et virus?

        • JWG says:

“Nobody would know there’s a so called pandemic” – Tell that to the families of the 2.7 million dead people worldwide, the overflowing mortuaries, the hospital employees worldwide swamped with the seriously ill and dying patients. You can stick your head in the sand if you like, and maybe you have because I think your brain has been deprived of oxygen. Otherwise you wouldn’t be spouting such non-sensical garbage.

Doing good says those who are employed and getting a salary. No concern for those employed in the tourism sector and those with businesses dependent on tourism, who are suffering and cannot meet their financial obligations.
We cannot stay closed off from the outside world forever.
There needs to be a firm reopening plan for the territory.
    May God help us all

      It is accurate. See: worldometer.com

      • checking facts says:

Yes, you are correct – worldometer.com shows 94,000 active cases – Don’t trust everything you read though. They have their numbers mixed up – its more likely 94,000 confirmed cases rather than active cases

As of March 7th, according to the CDC there were 147 people in hospital in PR with Covid. Based on these numbers the overall hospitalization rate would be .00156% If this was the case we wouldn’t be having a pandemic…Worldometer is wrong. NO way there are 94,000 people in PR with active covid…not even close.

  7. Boat owner says:

If you are going to alert the world get your facts straight. PR does not have 94000 active cases.

  9. Facts says:

USVI CDC rating may be at level 4 but their economy is at level 100 while ours is at level 0. When it’s all said and done the hospitals in USVI are not overwhelmed and people are not falling over dead due to COVID so what is the use of the rating? Meanwhile we are here patting ourselves on the back for killing the Territory for a whole year and now losing another entire tourist season, just because we don’t have confirmed covid cases. Are we that dumb?

  12. Mestizo says:

So if Puerto Rico and the USVI have so many cases, why it is only DR and UK travelers punish with the 15 days quarantine?? sounds discriminatory 100% as usual.

  13. JOKES says:

Cases = Persons chilling in hotels and villas because a nose rape test said positive. Meanwhile they are not feeling sick but just relaxing until they get nostril raped again and it says negative. Amazing how people are so stupid!!! Why aren’t hospitals, clinics, funeral homes and morgues in PR or USVI overwhelmed?

  14. Been American makes the difference says:

They are still getting more American tourist than us and those with CDC approval. They are going to get Cruiseships before us and more than us and those countries that CDC has given approval. If we continue to listen to these people, they will bankrupt our country further…Our leaders need to wake up and be wise…What does been Level one benefits us if Level 3 and 4 tourism and economies are doing better than ours…

  15. Come on says:

BVI at least try to get an all vaccinated cruise ship.

  16. Vaccinated Tourist says:

If you would lift your quarantine rules to people who have been vaccinated, like myself and thousands of others, we would come back and spend our $$$ there. Doesn’t make sense to keep us quarantined for days, when we are vaccinated. Change your rules and see what that does to your economy.
