HLSCC to assist students told to leave USA if colleges go online-only

The H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) is offering auxiliary services to accommodate local students who have been affected by the recent immigration policy-change by the United States government.

In a statement on Monday, the US Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) said international students currently enrolled at a US tertiary institution that are providing strictly online classes at this time will have to leave the country or risk deportation.

“Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States. The US Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and or programs that are fully online for the fall semester, nor will US Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States,” ICE stated.

It added: “Active students currently in the United States enrolled in such programs must depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction to remain in lawful status. If not, they may face immigration consequences including, but not limited to, the initiation of removal proceedings.”

A few universities such as Harvard have already began moving to online courses because of COVID-19.

HLSCC here to assist

Acting President of HLSCC Dr Richard Georges said his institution has, therefore, been putting measures in place to assist all local students who have been affected by this recent decision.

“We are trying to get them to reach out to us because it’s clearly on a case by case basis in terms of if a particular institution has gone completely online because it doesn’t apply to students if their school is partially online,” he said.

“That’s why we are asking those students to contact us so that we can then start identifying their needs and determine which resources would be appropriate for them. We want to assure them that we would be here to assist, if they found themselves in that situation,” the HLSCC President added.

Services to offer by HLSCC

Dr Georges said that the services to be offered by HLSCC will help to facilitate these affected students in their online classes by providing the needed resources for them to continue their studies.

“What we are willing to provide include private workspaces, reliable internet access, computer labs, [and] if necessary we can provide tutoring despite being a two-year college since we have a number of tutors with PHDs. So, we really have to look and see what those students when they contact us identify as their needs,” Dr Georges explained.

He said HLSCC also has access to the EBSCOhost Research Platform and the Cengage Unlimited digital learning platform, which are used by many colleges and universities across the globe.

How to contact HLSCC

All affected university students who are interested in acquiring any of the services by HLSCC are invited to contact Bria Smith at [email protected] to identify themselves, their current institution, and what resources they need.

Glad to see the US throwing out the BVI students. The BVI has chosen to remain shuttered from the US then it is only fair that the useless rich offspring of the ruling family Belongers have to leave the US.

That is stupid you know. The foreign students in the U.S. helps out with the economy by getting jobs to help with their student loans and etc. Also, do you really think belongers who are rich go to the U.S.? News flash they aren’t the only ones and that type of thinking is toxic.

Schools that provide online classes usually have their sh..t together and don’t need no outside interference. Ayo less self need to get your own act together to try to upgrade the online service offered here. My university have everything set. I do exams and submit my assignments plus any video conferences with the professors. Real professors not the jokers here who are teaching college because they know a topic but not teachers at it. Step aside and wash youall own clothes HLSCC. For me, my university don’t need your help for nothing.

You are not only envious, you are ignorant and evil. I hope that you are in an apartment belonging to a student or their family and they kick your asteroid to the curb along with your laptop or smart phone so you can think about how ignorant you are.
