HM Customs makes $61K drug find in coal shipment

The marijuana allegedly found hidden in bags of coal had a street value of a little more than $61,000.

Earlier this week, officers from Her Majesty’s Customs discovered some 6,140 grams of a substance suspected to be marijuana hidden in bags containing coal.

Assistant Commissioner of Enforcement Gerald Flemming said the discovery was made after the Customs K9-Unit executed a search at the dock following the arrival of the cargo vessel Sol Azul.

According to Flemming, the vessel arrived from an unnamed Caribbean island and the items were discovered within four bags of coal.

The search revealed that there were approximately 19 separate pieces of marijuana concealed within the bags.

It was also disclosed that the drugs carried a street value of approximately $61,140.

While there was a consignee attached to the shipment of coal, Flemming declined to give further details, citing the ongoing investigation into the matter.

Flemming commended the team for the discovery and said officers are continuously being trained to respond to events such as this.

He added that the HM Customs continues to receive intelligence about such matters and is further aided by shipping couriers as well.

It’s coal in the West Indies and man made charcoal in the rest of the English speaking world. Smoking weed smuggled in coal bags seems like a health hazard anyway.

We are seriously still referring to Marijuana as “drugs”???????? Nonsense. Contraband or illegal but not drugs. Marijuana is not a narcotic drug anywhere anymore.

While we are noticing the healing herb that was ceased by the customs department its alarming as to why the department head would reveal their sources to the media. They should have not stated their information comes from the shipping courier.
