Hope emerges as ESHS rises from the ruins

Students at the newly renovated Elmore Stoutt High School in Lower Estate.

It took five years, one school term and a global pandemic to rebuild one of the Virgin Islands’ premier institutions. But on January 4, the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) officially opened new doors to the full complement of staff and students.

Our news team was in the vicinity on the morning of January 4 and though there were no visible signs of fanfare, the symbolism of the institution’s reopening was evident.

The largest and oldest secondary school in the territory is back in business and will continue to mould the territory’s children, just like it has done in years gone by — shaping the lives of thousands of Virgin Islanders who continue to make their impact at home and abroad.

In addition to that, the reopening of ESHS symbolises the resilience of the Virgin Islands people and may be seen as a sign that the territory will always emerge stronger from disasters — whether they are natural or political in nature.

It may also be seen as a sign that the great institutions and values on which the territory was built will not be shaken as Virgin Islanders will always rise to the occasion to do what is best for the place they call home.

This restores hope. I had the privilege to witness the general assembly today at ESHS campus at their new facility with the entire school body together for the first time in years. It was so touching that I got goose bumps just listening and watching the smiles on everyone’s face. This is hope restored.

Go back cause you probably didn’t graduate but they wanted to get rid of you just like a good bit of them out there who can’t even spell their names, lol.

Education for all even if you fell short for the call.

Well like Irma gone with the toilet papers too? Why wasn’t there any in the new school building bathrooms? It’s the first day all cannot finish by 11:30 am.

Hmmm, One mart needs to put someone by the fence so children can order stuff since they cannot go out the compound.

The BVI do not appreciate anyone or any efforts any more. All most of them does is criticize, call down, bring down, destroy and eliminate each other. I am sick of all of this piddle now.

  13. Truth spoken here says:

At last we have a school. That’s good, but the fact that it took over 5 years to fix is a testament to the ineptitude and corruption in government, both before and after Irma. Our children’s future has been stolen by the failure to insure and then wrong priorities after the storm. So, it’s good that the school is now open, but this is NOT the result of government, but despite it. All who say otherwise have been drinking the Kool Aid. The BVI’s record in this is appalling and nothing to be proud of.

Thankful for all who helped to make this possible, however, I have a few suggestions moving forward:
    1. Use a circular design or one similar to what we have over the junior block
    2. Equipping the entire building with AC would be costly but with rising temperatures, it could get very uncomfortable for students and teachers who will be in the middle building.
    3. Include a cistern in the plan.
    4. Time to start making use of renewable energy.
    5. Don’t forget to include a staff room in the plan.
    6. Try and make sure that the basics things that are needed for teaching and learning are in place before a grand opening.

  15. Omg says:

Already no water at the new high school, so sad too see no vision , having no cistern is crazy which makes no sense

  16. Cameras says:

    Where are the CCTVS?

  17. @Observer says:

You’re calling for ACs AND for “renewable energy”? lol

  18. BuzzBvi says:

Great to see a school for our kids after 5 years. Took a year to build so only 4 years lost. Can I draw the attention to the police of the evidence available here of ilegal scooter riding. Thanks. Be great to see some action on that too. Such a relief to have a school back. Can you imagine the relief for all when the illegal scooter riding is solved.

    At the fence? Realy?

  20. Maurys Alfonso Risco says:

A fully equipped Theater and arts development area will be the next stage on the campus. This one has a block dedicated to technical activities, automotive mechanics, home economics, electronics, pastry, cooking, metal workshop, and wood workshop. Plus a good amount of classrooms capable to hold up to 800 students.
