The British Virgin Islands is getting set to witness horseracing action at the Ellis Thomas Downs this Sunday, January 27.

President of the BVI Horse Owners Association Lesmore Smith told BVI News on Friday, that a total of 14 racehorses from St Thomas, USVI travelled to the territory today (January 25) for the upcoming event.

They will compete with nine horses from the BVI in five races at the Sea Cows Bay-based facility.

“We are ready. We did most of the work on the track already,” Smith said.

Races

In the first race, five Class D horses will compete over seven furlongs for $5,000 cash prize. In the second race, five Class C horses are slated to race one mile for a purse of $5,500.

The third race carries a purse of $6,100. Three horses are down to compete in this one-mile race. The fourth race, in the meantime, will also happen over one mile. Five Class C horses will race for another $6,100 cash prize.

The final race which is for Class A and Class D horses carries the largest purse — $8,000. Four horses are down to race in this segment.

Purses to be funded by crowd

Smith urged patrons to turn out to support the Sunday’s event which will be entirely funded by proceeds at the gate.

He said: “By people coming to the races and supporting us, that makes funding a reality.”

He also thanked them for turning out in large numbers last December for the BVI’s successful staging of the 2018 Boxing Day races.

“It went well. We were able to pay all the bills including the other vendors, the entertainment and the purses,” he said.

It’s a shame that those poor animals have to suffer the whipping and torture that will be imposed on them to delight and amuse heartless people.

Thank You in advance horses! Finally, Sea Cow’s Bay might get some water today. So people, get your containers ready to full up water today and make sure you store enough to last you for next week.

Why don’t have the races next Sunday? Lesmore you want people to come out and support in large numbers when its a none paying week for most. Thursdays is 31st and most of the horse owners in Miami attending the Pegasus Cup. St Thomas horse owners told you to hold the races next Sunday February 3rd, 2019 Super Bowl Weekend. Lesmore you want to be a politician and you done ain’t listening. You and your horses going to be there by you all self. Lol
