Hospital to be assessed for potential accreditation in 2 months

The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) are advancing preparations ahead of its accreditation review set to take place in two months.

This is according to Chief Executive Officer of the BVIHSA, Dr Ronald Georges.

“We started our accreditation journey in 2016. Right now we are finalizing our policies, procedures and the environment to be ready for our assessment in September,” Dr Georeges said.

As part of the preparation process, a full assessment of the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital — formerly known as the Peebles Hospital — was conducted by consultants from Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) between June 17 to 21.

The consultants said they reviewed the hospital’s infrastructure, facilities, and equipment and advised on whether there were any gaps that may keep the BVIHSA from achieving accreditation.

In assessing the medical facility, consultants said it was well-equipped but needed to be consistent while maintaining standards.

After the assessment, the Infrastructure Department at the hospital was given recommendations for best practices and tips to help with accreditation readiness, following a debriefing session.

According to Dr Georges accreditation “can improve the hospital’s professional standing and community image, potentially affect financial reimbursement for services provided to patients and most importantly, reflect the authority’s dedication to providing top-quality patient care”.
