Humane Society amasses $71K in donations for new shelter after one month

In roughly one month after their public appeal for donations to fund their new shelter, the Humane Society has amassed more $71,000 in donations.

This was revealed by the charitable organisation via their website on Wednesday.

We have to date managed to raise $61,000 from personal donations and $9,690 from GoFundMe Fundraising,” a statement said.

It continued: “Thank you to everyone. We are determined and committed to raise the remainder of the funds, but we still have a long way to go. The amount of funds we need to raise $450,000 in total, but we are determined that we will raise these funds and will continue our mission to keep the doors of the only BVI animal shelter open.”

The charitable organisation then urged residents to watch their video, share, donate and spread the word that they are in need of financial assistance.

Half-million needed

Back in October, the Humane Society said it would require half-million dollars to build a new facility in Josiah’s Bay on Tortola.

They explained that they had been asked to vacate their rented quarters located at Johnson’s Ghut before the end of 2019 because the owners are desirous of developing the land.

“The Humane Society has been working on a plan to build a new shelter for many years. We have purchased our plot of land and a large steel frame building to establish a new shelter. However, we are now in critical need of donations to fund the erection of the building on our own land and to finish the construction, foundation, framing, plumbing, electrics, cages, etcetera,” the society stated at the time.

“Our situation is desperate, we must raise $500,000 to build the new shelter in order to continue providing care and shelter for the hundreds of unwanted animals on the island in need our assistance. If we do not raise enough funds to build a new shelter, the Humane Society of the BVI will be forced to close,” it had further said.

The facility was first opened in 1975 to cater to offering shelter, love and care to unwanted, abandoned and mistreated animals.

This is an important cause. I’ve been to Islands where they just let the strays run loose. They form dangerous packs and looked very unhealthy. I remember a tourist being mauled to death in St. Martin by one of them. Tortola has been very good at managing this and the animal shelter plays a big role in this by taking in these animals.

Stop the nonsense already, Do you think only WHITE people donate and care about the cause of stray animals?I am a dog owner who is a BLACK woman and my family donated $1,000. If more donation is needed, we will donate more. My daughter is making small quilts and pillows to donate for the animals to sleep on once the shelter is completed.

We don’t want any animal shelter in josiahs bay period. And yes the chained up dogs is enough . One police officer have over a dozen barking all night even barking at the wind. Many nights my family and neighbors can’t sleep because of this senior police officer dogs.she has no regards for the neighborhood. There is also another family who have about seven some are in chains and they bark nonstop. Presently we are trying to formulate a plan and seeking leagal advice to help us get a good night rest. I had a plan but the other neighbors don’t want me to carry out my plan so it’s on hold for now. I love animals to and i have dogs but mine don’t disturb anyone. So i want you bloggers and readers tell me what would you do if you were living next to a person with a dozen dogs barking all night??

Yes there are some nasty inconsiderate dog owners here in Josiah’s Bay… I have spoken to some of them and they don’t care. They say the dogs are on their land so they can do what they like. The chained up dogs bark, whine and yelp constantly day and night.. my bedroom is boarded up with plywood inside just to reduce the noise so I can get some sort of sleep. None of these dogs are licensed or have ever been vaccinated for anything…

I hope your plan was not to cause harm to the dogs. Those same barking dogs is helping keep your neighbor hood safe at nights. The dog owners is correct, once the dogs is on their private property, that’s it. Then move if you are having sleepless nights.

Okayyyy, but I hope your plan is not a plan to hurt those dogs. We will continue to advocate for the stray animals. They canot speak, and we are and will continue to be their voices. If we have to raise 10 million dollars to assure that there is a place for the stray animals on this Island,we will.

They would contribute to a dog than a colored human person all day every day of the year. Their very dna. Say it isn’t true and that this statement is racist.

I am a white lady with a colored husband here on Tortola. We give to charities that benefit both humans and animals. Your comment is racist and extremely offensive to all that are not. If you feel strongly about helping a particular cause, get off backside and start fundraising rather than criticizing those that make a difference. All good causes will be successful.

Stop appealing to “white” people for handouts. That gives them too much satisfaction.

I was in a disorganized USA city some time ago and attempted to get directions to a certain street in the area from one of them. She must have thought I was a beggar or a criminal because she said “sorry” and continued walking before hearing me out.

I don’t think I appeared to be threatening or scruffy in any way. I have a six figure income and millions in assets, so I had a good smile as I watched this smug human shuffle away.

  9. Oh yes says:

Anonymous, that was a racist comment.let me say this to you,I would contribute to any animal cause. Animals will appreciate everything that is given and done for them. Your words COLORED HUMANS IS DISLOYAL, YOU CAN BEND OVER BACKWARDS TO HELP A COLORED HUMAN, GIVE THEM YOUR LAST DOLLAR,FEED THEM AND THEY WILL TURN ON YOU AND SELL YOU OUT FOR A DOLLAR.A ANIMAL WON’T. THIS IS COMMING FROM THE LIPS OF LIPS OF A COLORED HUMAN. I WOULD GIVE MY LAST PLATE OF FOOD TO A ANIMAL BEFORE I GIVE IT TO A COLORED HUMAN.

All governments around the world had embark on preventative measures to control birth.why cant this government come up with a plan to control the population of these animals.do any of you bloggers want an animal shelter next to your property. I do not want any.i really do think that the cat and dog population need to seriously decrease in the bvi.to much strayed animal’s. Every were you turn is stray dogs and cats. I personally is going to deal with those that comes on to my property like it or not. Keeping away suspected burglars is one thing but when you have barking dogs all night is anpther. And you are saying i must move from my property so the dogs don’t disturb me well this person got to be an a×÷ without any tail.

  11. Truth says:

Well then encourage people to have their animals fixed to help curb the problem rather than tossing them out on the streets.

    • Reasonable Man says:

Truth is right about the unfairness of having to live near neighbours who are unresponsible dog owners. I have had to listen to dogs who bark all day. It was impossible to work at my desk and was almost enough to make you go mental. Most of the owners around me are pretty good now and their animals seem trained not to do this but for those that are not, there should be a way of having those animals removed.

I have 8 or 10 nonstop barking dogs behind house from one neighbor . at least 5 in front from another house.. ridiculous… should I have to sell my property to get away from them ? 15 dogs in two small properties… sick of them all… and it does become torture day and night week after week, month after month.

    • animal lover says:

PAW BVI pays for animals to be spayed / neutered at no cost to the owner – they try to spread awareness of this as much as possible but the more people know the better

  12. Truth says:

So i should drive around the bvi with a loud speaker telling people to fixed their animals on go on the radip or internet?? These people dont know that they need to control the animal breeding?? A lot of the dogs and cats roaming scavenging for food does not have any owners anymore. They need to be put to sleep period.
