I want my Brexit! Vanterpool, Willock want ties cut with UK

Vanterpool (left) and Willock

Fourth District Representative, Mark Vanterpool and former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Julian Willock have both called for the BVI to cut ties with the United Kingdom (UK) as the territory’s administering power.

Vanterpool, while speaking in the House of Assembly (HOA) recently, protested that the BVI was handed a bouquet with a bunch of recommendations in the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report recently, with the first of these being for a UK takeover.

He said while some things might not have been done in the right way in the past in the BVI, the territory has the ability to correct it and should be allowed to do so.

“Write the report, recommend, make a recommendation and let us correct it. Don’t tell me you have to come and correct it for us,” Vanterpool said.

“And then you want to tell us that we ought to have a constitutional review and you must have a decision on who will who going to serve on the constitutional review [committee]?

Vanterpool argued that the same conservative UK government that insisted that Europeans shouldn’t tell them what to do, were now insisting on telling the BVI government what it should do.

He called it hypocrisy for the UK to be doing this to the BVI and said it was unacceptable.

“Well, I want my Brexit. Y’all laughing about this [but] it’s no joke. I want my Brexit. Leave us alone,” Vanterpool argued.

Brexit is an abbreviation of two English words — ‘Britain’ and ‘exit’ — and refers to the withdrawal process of the United Kingdom from the European Union.

Independence by 2029?

In the meantime, when asked in a recent interview where he saw the BVI‘s political future, the former Speaker Willock said: “The political future of the BVI is that we must be talking now about self-determination, whatever form that takes.”

“We must be saying now that by 2028, 2029, we must be free. That should be the goal,” he said.

According to Willock, being free in that context means the BVI would have its own independent institutions and have no governor or administrative power like the UK.

“The future of the BVI is we need our independence,“ Willock insisted while conceding that the BVI has some things to fix.

There was a time when I had some respect for Mark Vanterpool. He seemed like a man who got things done.

But now alas all respect has gone.

His panic over having to reveal his interests says more than any criminal investigation ever could.

The best thing he could do is to resign and go back to private life.

It may not serve him but it will definitely serve us.

I never had an ounce of respect for Willock.

Good idea; the BVI can be confident it will go from strength to strength as an independent country. You only have to read the CoI report and see where Fahie and Maynard are.

    By by UK, hallo Haiti!

What happened to the billions of government revenue since the 1980s. Why is our infrastructure and public education so poor?

Can we tar and feather these two and take them out to sea and set them adrift? That way we can cut ties with them in lieu of the UK. The UK is here to help. These two are here to help themselves.

Mark Vanterpool said while some things might not have been done in the right way in the past in the BVI, the territory has the ability to correct it and should be allowed to do so. The territory haven’t corrected itself in the last 30 years now that the pressure is on you want to talk crap, everyday you show the UK that you are not going to change because you want the corruption to continue, you want to brake away from the UK because you cant have your way, its time to suck it up and come clean, none of you is better than the other.

Question: Why is it that the people with a vested interest in the dirty, under-the-table, wink-wink, you-scratch-my-back and I’ll-scratch-yours, system of government we’ve put up with for years seem to be the ones SO VERY MUCH in favour of cutting ties with anyone that can call foul to their nefarious activities?

I am in agreement with you. It appears that Mark wasn’t aware that the UK’s relationship with the EU was one of strategic alliance not ownership. The UK owns the BVI, so the sooner those politicians understands this, the sooner we could move forward in a respectful and productive manner.

I am so disappointed with the foolishness in the HOA. Perhaps Mark should spend his energy begging for a new slate of credible individuals to come forward for the next election.

Ole ppl say higher monkey climb the more they ass expose, with that been said if you are not involved in any forms of corruption then you have nothing to worry about. The BVI is not an INDEPENDENT island yes “ISLAND” although some behave as if its not an ISLAND,the bvi is a COLONY of England, a colony with so many corruptions, an island that politicians are fighting to get independence, some of those same politicians are high up on the corruption scale,What are those same persons real intentions. Yes every island/country wanna be independence but I believe the question that people of the bvi gotta ask.

    1) Are we really ready to be an independent nation.

    2) can we stand on our own if cut off from England.

3)what will be the island new name.

    4) what will become the country main currency.

    5) will it become part caricom like, Antigua,st. Lucia,st.vincent etc.

What about the implicated Police, Air Port and other Port workers inplicated?? Why is nothing at all happening in the BVI? Police, belonging to Rankin doing nothing? How many months have passed and all quiet?

Nothing ever changes in the BVI, the criminals control everything and get richer and richer and little people starve and can’t pay bills. Slavery is alive and well in the BV?I.
