Improved water supply coming to VG, new reservoir with increased capacity nearly complete

Work on the new reservoir at Perot Hill in Virgin Gorda is in its final stages and will hold vastly more water than the previous tank.

A June 19 media release by the Department of Water and Sewage said North Sound residents will be experiencing an improved water supply once the new 28-feet glass-fused-to-steel reservoir is completed.

“The new tank is expected to address the storage concerns, as it has a holding capacity of about three hundred thousand (300,000) gallons of water. This is over 400 percent of the holding capacity of the fibreglass reservoir to be replaced in the Bond,” said Director of the department, Pearline Scatliffe-Leonard.

She also said that the replacement was necessary since maintenance of the old reservoir, which was in operation for an estimated 25 years, was becoming too expensive.

“Through all the repairs and maintenance efforts, the reservoir presented challenges — most notably, the inability to maintain the six feet of water, resulting in leaks at the panel joints, to a reduced yield of three feet of water being maintained,” Scatliffe-Leonard said.

The transfer of the pumping main from the old to the new reservoir has already started and will take an estimated two weeks to complete.

The process will include the installation of an underground by-pass line. This line “would become a contingent alternative provision of water in the event that maintenance is needed on the reservoir”.

Residents in the Bond area are asked to replenish their cisterns and other storage containers as disruption of the water service will occur once the transferring of the water begins. It is expected to take an additional three days to fill the new reservoir.

A notice will be issued informing the residents when the filling of the reservoir will begin.

The idea to improve the water supply in Vg is good. What is this government doing to upgrade water supply to Sea Cow’s Bay and environs? Water is supplied for 1 to 3 hours on few days weekly but the bill is sky high ,claiming that the bill is estimated. The bill is given based on 18 to 24 hours supply but instead ,it is supplied for 1 to 3 hours on few days.We hope concrete solution should be found to this chronic problem.

Ok. Having a steady supply of potable water is one thing but what about the quality of the water. Is the water safe for drinking, bathing, cooking……etc? What standard is the water produce to meet? Is the water monitored, tested and analyzed? Is a communique issue to the public when a positive test occurs, advising them about what action(s), ie, not to drink, bath or cook with water…..etc to take until the contamination is resolve? Are the technicians working on the water system certified?
