Infrastructure work gathers pace at BVIHSA

Infrastructure upgrades at the BVI Health Services Authority are advancing, with works now underway across multiple areas of the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital campus, according to officials.

Providing an update, Marketing and Communications Manager, Damion Grange, said the ongoing projects reflect the authority’s focus on strengthening healthcare delivery through improved facilities.

“At the BVIHSA, we believe strongly that a solid infrastructure is the basis for great healthcare,” Grange stated.

Among the key projects is the installation of new chillers, which are expected to be mounted on the hospital roof. Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr June Samuel said preparations are in place for that phase of work. “The chillers are going to be installed. Come next week, the cranes will be here,” Dr Samuel stated.

Temporary access restrictions

She added that access to parts of the facility will be temporarily restricted during installation. “This parking lot is going to be closed off completely for access,” Dr Samuel explained, noting that the public will be guided on alternative arrangements.

Officials also highlighted progress on a generator connectivity project aimed at improving power reliability across the campus. Dr Samuel said the upgrade will allow the hospital to operate on a unified system during outages.

“The whole campus is connected to our generators… so that during periods of power outage, we have a smooth transition,” she said. She added that obsolete generators are being removed as part of the process.

Additional works

Additional works focuses on structural maintenance to address wear and prior storm damage. Dr Samuel said cleaning, crack repairs, and sealing are underway to improve the building’s condition and resilience. “The whole building will be sealed… so that the infrastructure is properly waterproofed,” she noted.

A separate update from the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) outlined parallel efforts, including exterior cleaning, signage upgrades, and planned roof repairs with lightning protection systems. The agency said these works are intended to strengthen safety and long-term resilience at the territory’s main hospital.

Dr Samuel said the projects align with broader goals for patient care and safety. “All of these enhancements are in keeping with our strategic priorities… to ensure that we deliver care that is safe, that is client-centred,” she stated.

Grange said further updates will be provided as works continue, particularly regarding access and parking changes during construction phases.
