A local inmate who assaulted a prison officer two years ago was sentenced to 12 months in prison when he appeared before the Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Twenty-one-year-old Omarie Winter was sentenced after pleading guilty to the May 2016 offence.
Winter’s sentence will run concurrent to the five-year prison term that he is currently serving for unrelated gun and ammunition offences.
In handing down the sentence on Friday, Magistrate Shawn Innocent said Winter’s early guilty plea and the fact that it is an old matter were some of the mitigating factors he took into consideration.
The court heard that, on the day in question, Winter was at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut when a prison officer instructed him to return to his cell.
The order reportedly triggered a verbal altercation between Winter and the officer. The argument escalated into a physical fight which resulted in the prison officer sustaining swelling and an abrasion to his nose.
Winter was subsequently charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
