Is the opposition facing a ‘three-peat’ loss in 2027 elections?

The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) could secure a third consecutive election victory if opposition parties remain divided, commentator Claude Skelton Cline has warned.

Speaking on his radio programme Honestly Speaking, Skelton Cline said the opposition’s handling of the recent no-confidence motion in the House of Assembly mirrored what could happen in the next general election, constitutionally due in 2027.

“You see how that vote of no confidence went in the final analysis? It is a perfect picture, a prototype of what will happen in a 2027 general election if we don’t change course,” Skelton Cline said.

During the motion, one member abstained, two were absent, and the government side retained its majority. Skelton Cline argued that the opposition risked repeating this scenario with voters.

“You are going to have a set of people in one instant who’s going to abstain. And the public is going to abstain. They’re going to sit on their hands. In other words, they’re not going to vote,” he explained.

He added that others may not turn up on election day or arrive too late to cast their ballots.

“And then you’re going to end up with a couple people voting yea and the majority voting the other way. And the Virgin Islands Party will remain in power,” he said.

The VIP, led by Premier DR Natalio Wheatley, retained power at the 2023 general election after securing six of the 13 elected seats. Opposition parties, including the National Democratic Party (NDP), Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), and Progressives United, split the remaining seats.

In June 2025, the NDP and PVIM announced a merger, but they have yet to confirm a new party leader. Skelton Cline argued that unless opposition parties unite and identify a clear leader, history will repeat itself.

“You all are about to have a three-peat of what you repeated in ’23 and what you repeated in 2019. That’s a three-peat,” he insisted.

He also questioned the ability of opposition parties to field enough strong candidates. Skelton Cline cautioned that the current trajectory pointed to continued VIP dominance.

“What you all doing right now is pure politics and it’s not the answer. It’s going to put this country in deeper doo-doo,” he stated.

BUT, there is a Section of the Territory who are die- Hard V.I.P and will Vote for them whether the Territory Sink or Float. Then there is another Section which includes Indigenous Virgin Islanders and Island People, Ha.Ha. who will Vote for The Alliance Leader just for Spite this time around. But I caution Everyone to be Patient. The Next Premier of this territory will very soon declare their Candidacy. Stay Tuned…

Hope you registered in the 6th. M has said he ain’t resign from the NDP ! What is he waiting on? Can’t field 6 much less 13 candidates. The alliance ain’t even a party. I guess they will soon do that. M need to have confidence in the alliance and RESIGN FROM THE NDP. Leadership is not being a coward. M seems to be a coward

  16. Truthfully Speaking says:

Even if VIP is the only party run for election and all the other candidates are independents, VIP dont have to win another election unless the people foolishly vote for VIP candidates. If people really want a change of government, just dont vote VIP.

Of course there us a diehard set of voters that will vote for their party, VIP. But others don’t have to join them. All the other candidates that win can form an alliance after they win the election, and form a government if there is enough of them to do so, and just let the VIPs go take a rest on the opposition side for a change.

What that broadcaster said about the no confidence vote is a mirror, is only partly true. It is a mirror of the divided state of the people in general. Voters on the no confidence motion were the parliamentarians, at a general election voters will be the voting public, a stark difference. Votes at the election can choose to remove the VIP government and that has nothing to do with current opposition members.

People need to stop giving so much attention to what the bias haters are saying and think for themselves. The people has more power at the polls than they realize. The need to use it well, to go and cast their votes AGAINST the VIP and not worry about whether current opposition are divided or not. Everybody divided at this point and its not the man that they love to hate is responsible for that.

The people MUST unite at the polls against the excuse of a government that should not be returned to power, under no circumstances.

  17. Hmmmm says:

I don’t see how. I would still vote for Opposition over VIP. My people and wonderful all of them, but they are not politicians. They do not have a clue how to run this country or even how to simply manage a Ministry. They are young, educated and clueless. Spend their time like the majority of 18 to 28 generation, on social media, chatting it up, traveling, liming, making sure they look good and whatever else that generation does. But working, actually doing work that will take this country forward, well, that is not happening. We cannot see that happening and the country and people are suffering for it.

Anybody who vote VIP are getting handouts period. Because it is obvious they are not interested in building this country. They are not even maintaining what they met. We are stagnant, stagnant ah say. Drove Fort Hill road twice this weekend and I wondered the whole way which way the Premier drives to and from his home. This is just sad. Three-peat? It won’t be nobody who have a brain in their head. Just give them a grade. Just sit down and look around. Just drive around and look around. Just turn on the HOA when they are sitting. A whole lot of fluffy words about how many visitors, who are scared shitless driving on our roads BTW, and what they are going to do and then, aiiirrrrr. Vote for VIP? Not so smart people will do so or recepients of goodies, but we are mostly sensible people in this country and we love our country. Four more years of this crew and we are sunk. Love them though we do, they are not working for the country period.
