Kedrick Malone appointed to oversee COI progress

Kedrick Malone.

Kedrick Malone has been approved by Cabinet to spearhead the implementation of recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry (COI).

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley announced the new development during a press briefing last week, noting that Cabinet approved a Governance reform delivery manager.

The appointment comes in response to guidance from the UK Overseas Territories Minister, David Rutley. Last month, Rutley advised Dr Wheatley to appoint a dedicated individual to oversee the final phase of the COI’s implementation process.

Premier Wheatley explained that Rutley’s counsel emphasised the importance of selecting a person who could be solely responsible and accountable for ensuring the fulfilment of the COI’s recommendations.

“What he communicated to me, his advice to me was, ‘Get an individual who you can hold accountable and this is the only thing they’re responsible for. It’s just ensuring that everyone does what they’re supposed to do — one individual and that’s their only responsibility.’ And we’re taking his advice on that,” the Premier said at the time.

According to the Premier, work on 50 of the 50 framework recommendations has begun and 29 of the COI recommendations have been completed. He also noted that 21 recommendations are in progress.

Malone, who has a rich background in various governmental roles, including a recent stint as a Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office, brings a wealth of experience to the crucial role.

Some of his recent work with the government includes the review of residency and Belonger status-granting processes, as advised by the COI, alongside his contribution to the government’s new immigration policy.

I was presicient in my advocacy for this strategic decision .There was a missed opportunity for proactive engagement rather than reactive response i.e we should have taken the initiative to present this action to the OT Minister rather than waiting for a directive. Hon C Malone would have been the obvious individual to lead this, but in Mr K Malone we have both qualifications and efficacy, a fitting symbolic and effective option.

My sincere apologies for inadvertently causing offense with a mere typographical error. As an imperfect human, I must admit to the addition of an unnecessary ‘i’ in ‘prescient.’ However, I find it rather curious the level of vitriol that has been stirred within you. It may indicate either an inflated sense of self-importance or a deficiency in the same. Regardless, I earnestly hope that you refrain from further elevating your blood pressure over such a minor oversight. Surely, it is not worth risking a heart attack over a simple error.

Why wasn’t this done from the beginning? What it also highlights is that we are wasting alot of money paying senior civil servants. They are all highly paid, some even more than Ministers and yet we still need private contractors/consultants to move the real work forward. The BVI is slowly becoming a turd world country (yes, turd!).

  7. Seriously? says:

Kedrick couldn’t organize himself out of a paper bag and is a bad choice. Why is such activity only happening at the 11th hour, after prompting by the UK? The BVI has never taken their promise on the COI seriously and took the usual “action” of doing little and hoping that the issue would go away. Yet again – no vision and no proactivity. SMH.
