Kye’s Cry! Ask Finance Ministry about water woes

Rymer.

Works Minister Kye Rymer seemingly put his own government in the line of fire last week when he spoke candidly about the issues he’s been having with getting crucial funds to fix the aging water infrastructure across the territory.

During the House of Assembly sitting on February 20, Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn asked Minister Rymer to state the plans his government has to fix the water infrastructure.

When Rymer stood to respond, his words were laced with frustration as he outlined that his ministry has a $20 million plan to fix the water issues but has only been given $200,000 for repairs in the 2004 budget.

“I think you should pose that question to the Minister of Finance,” Rymer said. “You will continue to ask me and I’ll continue to say the same. I can’t repair it if I don’t have the funds and it’s unfortunate that we are here with these questions.”

Rymer then commended the staff of the Water and Sewerage Department, saying they continue to do their best although infrastructure problems frustrate them.

“It’s frustrating to them, to me and to the residents. And unless we get that injection of proper capital, we’ll continue to be here — you’ll continue to ask and I’ll repeat the same thing. We want to get the pipes repaired but we don’t have the funds,” Rymer said candidly.

Penn then stood and thanked Rymer for speaking candidly about the issue he’s facing with getting the funds to do repairs. He then asked Rymer whether he was getting adequate support from the government to do the work he wishes to do.

However, Rymer avoided answering this question directly, saying the problems with water infrastructure are not new and are well known. He also said his government is supportive and has been making efforts to address the water problem the territory is facing.

Just last week, the government announced that it is taking steps to carry out leak detection and remediation works on major infrastructure on Tortola.

That is so sad that no matter how we complain and struggle with water woes the minister is only given $200,000.00 in the 2024 budget. Look at the bright side, at least they already earmarked a few million for travel even though they don’t know where they are going.
Maybe they need to travel to take a shower.

AT THE END OF THE DAY WATER IS ESSENTIAL. WE ENFORCED ALL SORTS OF PROTOCOLS WHEN IT WAS CONVID. BUT, HAPPEN TO ENFORCING PROPER RUNNING WATER FOR ALL CITIZENS? WE NEED WATER TO BE CLEAN.
THEN THERE IS RAW SEWERAGE IN OUR STREETS. I DO HOPE THAT THEY TOOK SOME SEA WATER AND WASHED THE ROADS DOWN.
    SHAMEFUL, SHAMEFUL.

  6. Reality Check says:

Unfortunatly the Minister has proven that he has zero management abilities and has resorted to turning PW into an even more expensive GSB. Instead of manning up or hiring a real manager, PW will now have an ineffectual board of syncophants that won’t be capable of making decisions; a committee of one is most efficient, degrading with every additional member!

You can only grade someone when you give them the resources to work. From Gary Penn’s time this department was in problems. Mr. Wiggly went and he did some stuff including installing some inferior pipes all against the advise of engineers but he had no resources and did what he had to do to stop some only the bleeding. Until they fund the department it will continue to get worse.

Richard Branson drop in a pothole that locals dropping in all the time and them scramble went go fix it cause is he. Maybe we need to ask Richard Branson to make a video about how some people still cant get reliable water supply in bvi and that we does have sewerage fountains in town occasionally and maybe somebody might feel embarrassed enough to allocate money to fix it.

Please dont re do any roads until the water dept has the skills to fit pipes that dont burst every 6 feet week after week.

You got the first part right / but , the country is not to be blamed / ITS WHO IS OR WHAT RUNNING THE COUNTRY ( the country provides us with its natural beauty etc we just had to emulate those who expressed themselves with integrity but they choose to to do the opposite by exploiting the country and their own people , and here we are ~ experiencing the side effects (AKA) wannabe politicians ) who think that they are all that, and they really believe it too

Thank you Hon.Rymer for speaking out. It’s years now I’ve been hearing it’s the FS, it’s the Ministry of Fonance, back to the FS and still nothing has changed. We are in 2024! I don’t have running water, what a shame! I’m sure the Government Ministers all have pipes and running water. Alas I continue to pay the water truck yo deliver……when will it end?? Do I have to March on this too?
