Landlord accused of wounding tenant

Huggins

A landlord from Virgin Gorda has been brought before the Magistrate’s Court after he allegedly wounded his tenant.

Charged with wounding and being armed with an offensive weapon — a knife — is Morris Huggins.

He entered a not guilty plea when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards on Tuesday.

Allegations

The court heard that on May 18, Huggins and one of his tenants were involved in a dispute at his Millionaire Road residence.

Prosecutors said the male complainant went to Huggins’ home to inquire about electricity when the conversation turned into a fight.

Both men sustained injuries during the scuffle, the court heard.

Huggins’ glass sliding door was also broken.

The matter was reported to the police, and after being treated for his injuries, Huggins was arrested and charged.

‘Self-defence

During his arraignment, Huggins told the court he was defending himself because his tenant attacked him at his home.

He said the complainant threw an alternator at him, causing his glass door to break.

Senior Magistrate Richards, however, reminded the accused that he is currently on bail for another offence. She then ruled that his bail be momentarily denied until Thursday when the matter will be reviewed.

Huggins was unrepresented.

Looks like the Overspend got a kicking from the High Court on his case suggesting that his contract should be renewed despite the massive overspend. Fortunately he has $16k per month to pay the costs.

Landlord and tenant laws were promised by NDP years ago now instead of having the law dictate how matters should be handled landlords and tenants must do battle to settle disputes.
