Late educators Callender, Walters left good legacies; emulate them – Walwyn

Walwyn

National Democratic Party (NDP) Chairman Myron Walwyn has described the late Gordon Junior Dennis Callender and Lucia Walters as stalwarts of local education who left a good legacy behind.

Walwyn, speaking via a government-issued statement, urged others to follow in their footsteps, as he joined with the rest of the territory to celebrate their lives.

He said they were both “instrumental in shaping the lives of many young persons in this territory and in also building of the education system.”

“Educators have a special place in my heart, both past and present. I consider all members of the education system to be one family – my family, and I have learnt to appreciate the efforts and sacrifices they often have to make while carrying out their duties,” he said.

Who was Gordon Callender?

Callender, according to the statement, started teaching in the British Virgin Islands since the 1980s. He worked at the Joyce Samuel Primary School as a teacher and at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School as both teacher and principal. He retired in 2010.

Walwyn said many of Callender’s past students remembered him as a ‘father figure, an outstanding teacher, a caring person, an inspiring and admirable human being’.

“His legacy will always remain alive in the memories of the people of the Virgin Islands,” Walwyn added.

Who was Lucia Walters?

Lucia Walters or Teacher Lu’s educational journey started in the 1940s. She held the roles of teacher, assistant teacher and head teacher at various schools including the East End Methodist Church School and Jost Van Dyke Primary.

She then moved on to become an Education Officer in the Department of Education and was tasked to implement the USAID Curriculum Project in Mathematics and English.

A sports house at the Willard Wheatley Primary School was named the ‘Walter’s House’ in her honour. She retired in 1986.

Walwyn who extended condolences to their families further said: “Let us remember these two stalwarts and emulate the good legacy they have left behind for generations to come.”

May they both Rest In Peace!

??? Don’t these Reporters spell check or proof read before printing?

Also, Myron needs to do proper research before speaking or giving written remarks.
Teacher Callender was teaching way before the 80s and certainly, Ms Walters could not have retired in 1888. Just showing, think before you speak! Speak Facts when you do.

I guess Hon. Walwyn never did anything good for this country, right? You dumb fool. Hope you never did anything that seemed wrong in your entire life. Goodie two shoes! Whether you like it or not Hon. Walwyn will rise above all that you desire for him and will be the next Premier of this country!Who has the final say? Jehovah of course! What you think or say does not matter!
