Legislation to benefit nurses and midwives promised for the BVI

Legislation to empower nurses to function in enhanced capacities in their profession is being promised for the British Virgin Islands.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Carvin Malone had made the promise following the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) declaration of 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.

“The Ministry of Health & Social Development will work closely with the British Virgin Islands Nurses Association and other partners to create a long-lasting legacy that will raise the profile of the profession with the public, boost its professional status, and make it sustainable in the future,” further Malone said.

“We believe that developing nursing and midwifery and allowing nurses and midwives to work to their full potential are one of the most important things we can do to improve health. They are too often undervalued and unable to work to the top of their license; an extraordinary waste of talent and resources,” he added.

The WHO has said that the designation of 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife is to help achieve universal health coverage by 2030 by producing nine million more nurses and midwives globally.

Some 221 nurses are registered to practice in the territory. Of this number, 66 are midwives.
