Less dust! Road works long time in coming, says Penn

Recent road works in the Paraquita Bay area.

Residents and motorists who live and traverse the Parquita Bay and East End areas of Tortola can literally start breathing easier as government has commenced projects to address longstanding dust nuisance issues.

The Mark Vanterpool-led Works Ministry has paved the once-deplorable Paraquita Bay road in the vicinity of H Lavity Stoutt Community College.

The team is now tackling thoroughfares further east.

Those works will include using concrete instead of asphalt to pave roads in the Long Look area.

Representative for the Eighth Electoral District, Marlon Penn has described the undertaking as a ‘needed relief’.

“I just want to commend the team. I think this is a long time in coming. I think we needed to give some type of relief to the residents of the Paraquita Bay area because the dust has been really a nuisance,” Penn said.

Once completed, the Works team will be heading to the western end of the island.

“After this project, we are heading to Carrot Bay. We are going to pave the Carrot Bay road and then do some other paving in some other areas. These are all relatively temporary projects until we do the complete design of these roads and the drainages and everything [using] the lessons have learnt from the storms last year,” Vanterpool said while speaking with the Government Information Service recently.

Notably, government has also done road works in the Sea Cow’s Bay area which was also in terrible condition.

That is the stone truth. Canaan Road and the bottom of Johnson’s Ghut where the grate used to be – that is just a *disgrace*. And that was from BEFORE the hurricane.

Sooner or later some tourist is going to get killed by driving into the giant hole by accident. And don’t get me started on how chewed up the road is at the bottom of the hill and the first part heading up.

It is about time. The 7th and 8th Districts are the gateway into the territory from Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport yet the roads are in a severely deteriorated and deplorable condition. Further, the way the road is being constructed is concerning. From my observation as a lay person, the roads will have a short life before they need to be reconstructed. It has been a long wait but they need to be constructed properly for an extended life. Is Jeffrey “Bomber” Skelton still the Director of PWD?

Bout time…got us up there catching ride/bus in the sun or rain and inhaling dust harming our health…We need a bus stop too…just saying.

You made your point pretty clearly..

  14. Political Observer (PO) says:

Blowing dust presents and exposes residents to a health hazard. PWD should be taking steps to control the dust, ie, wetting with water truck…….etc until roads are repaired. Further, every road project contract should include a dust control task. The roads are in a deplorable condition; the condition of the roads was exacerbated by the passage of Hurricane Irma and Maria in September 2017.

Nonetheless, a more aggressive pothole patching programme should have been put in place to improve rideability and reduce vehicle and equipment owmers operating cost. First impression is important and lasting. Most visitors coming in by air passed through East End and Fat Hogs Bay and these roads should have been given a higher repair/reconstruction priority.

  15. Sam the man says:

I thought there was intentions from the NDP to learn from past mistakes, poor quality construction etc? Evidently it’s all talk as usual from the “No Direction Party” as this hastily and poorly shoddy workmanship won’t last the month! Yet no doubt has cost a lot! We are getting ripped off!

  16. Kangaroo Jackie Chan says:

Not impressed at all! That area and section will have to be dig up again shortly (before hurricane season is here) due to the fact that:

    1. No drainage installed to address the ponding and poor surface run-off.

    2. The “National” Sewerage Project has to come from Hodges Creek area to Pari.
    3. The asphalt has NOT been adequately laid/installed. Sub-base and based courses are failing and thus Pot-holes re-appearing.

Waste of scarce tax-payer funds at this critical time. Best they had done the utilities installs first then paved after imo.

we need a new govt. these fools are 30 years behind with infrastructure

  18. huh says:

B v i Ports Authority needs to do like wise. Can you imagine resurfacing a heavily congested port with DIRT? (all that dust). You have to see it to believe it. I was there the other day and it is horrible . I am mostly concerned about the employees who have to be subjected to it every single day. The ports manager needs to make sure the dirt paved area has concrete or asphalt ,in order to reduce the inhalation of so much dust.
Ports Authority manager , you need to fix it and as soon as possible. Your employees health is as risk

  19. Rubber Duck says:

Some of the $400 million infrastructure money should be used to bring in a French or Chinese contractor to rebuild the whole road network to proper international standards. Sticking thin blacktop onto crumbling concrete and dust will not work longterm and the next heavy rains,as we all know, will wash it away again.
