LIAT suspends services due to volcanic activity
Regional airline, LIAT has suspended all flights in the southern part of its network as of Friday, April 9.
LIAT suspended those flights because of the ongoing eruptions of the La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
“The suspension, which affects all flights south of Dominica, has been caused by the explosive eruption of the La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent. This eruption has spewed large ash clouds into the atmosphere and forced the closure of airports and airspace in the vicinity,” the airline said in a recent media release.
It added: “LIAT has cancelled flights to/from the following destinations for April 10, 11 and 12, 2021, until further notice: Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent.”
La Soufriere began erupting on Friday, April 9, blanketing the nation in ash and smoke and forcing some 16,000 residents out of their homes.
Overall, it’s estimated that some 20,000 people will be displaced.
It’s also understood that the volcanic ash had started to impact the Grenadines, Barbados, and St Lucia — all neighbouring islands.
