Lives matter more | HoA postponed due to looming inclement weather

The continuation of the Sixth Sitting of the House of Assembly which was scheduled for Monday (today) has been postponed to September 2, due to the looming inclement weather.

“We wanted to give members a chance to consult with their constituencies because of the pending weather we are asked to monitor,” Speaker of the House of Assembly Julian Willock told BVI News.

He said the decision was made after consultation with Premier Andrew Fahie and Leader of the Opposition Marlon Penn.

Premier Fahie who also commented on the postponement said the move was necessary “so that all can get ready and stay ready for this pending weather because the people of the Virgin Islands lives matter more”.

Be ready

In the meantime, Premier Fahie speaking via a media release also urged residents to prepare.

He said: “I take this time to remind everyone that we are in the hurricane season and I am reminding you to get ready and to stay ready. Be sure to continue your preparedness and planning.”

“Visit the Department of Disaster Management’s (DDM) website (bviddm.com) to learn what you need to do to prepare. I encourage you to download the DDM app, follow the department on social media, or subscribe for regular updates on individual weather systems and other potential hazards,” he further told residents.

Your government is hard at work

The Premier further reminded residents that his government is hard at work preparing for the eventuality of a weather disturbance.

“Our comprehensive clean-up of the territory continues to clean up the BVI, and we have started the process of cleaning guts and clearing roads. We invite you to do your part as well and remove debris from around your homes as we make our communities safe for everyone, during what is expected to be an active season.”

Weather update

As of 11 am today, the DDM reported that the BVI should continue to monitor the path of Tropical Storm Dorian.

The centre of the storm was located about 135 miles east-southeast of Barbados.

“Dorian continues to move toward the west and north near 14 miles per hour. On the forecast track, the centre of the storm is expected to be near the Windward Islands late today and tonight and move into the eastern Caribbean Sea tomorrow. Dorian is expected to pass near or south of Puerto Rico Wednesday night,” the DDM said.

How bout you close down government too, so that we can all ‘get ready’? Or do our lives not matter too?

Why aren’t you ready to begin with? Forgot about Irma already? No, you just expect the gov to give you a half day to load around for no reason. If you were really sooooo worried about storm prep you wouldn’t wait until the storm 12 hours away. Typical STRUPE entitlement

That feels pretty extreme. Even if it takes the most northward possible projected track, Dorian shouldn’t come within 90 miles of the BVI (and it is only 45 miles wide as a storm). If the House of Assembly will cancel sitting every time a storm enters the Eastern Caribbean – even if it is no threat to us – then there is not a lot going to get done in this sitting of the House.

I do not agree with your statement. Once bitten, twice shy. That storm could change direction at any moment. They were never projecting Irma to hit us directly until we got the text from DDM 15 minutes before we were DIRECTLY HIT. so back off…they needed to get their offices hurricane ready…if they had went ahead with the HoA and something happened you would have still find fault…can’t please everybody.

Why? The ministers all have new SUV’s, the Premier even has bodyguards. Why can’t all 13 members meet today Monday, work fast, adjourn on Tuesday to 2 Sept. and then stay home on the rainy/windy Wednesday.

How do you know what they have to do and how long it might take? When did you become an expert?
